WHY FARM EXPERIENCE IN SOUTH AMERICA?

You’re tired of school and want to be out in the nature, get your hands dirty and discover the world at the same time? The weather in Germany is starting to get on your nerves and you’re dreaming of sunshine, fresh air and unique landscapes? Why not combine your stay abroad with a farmstay! Give yourself a successful change from everyday life, spend an unforgettable time in the country and discover a new culture. No other continent is better suited for this than Latin America, because the exciting countries could not be more diverse. And the best thing is that the farms in Central and South America are familiar and authentic, and not overcrowded on a grand scale. This way you get to know the real life of the locals and are accepted as a member of the family. By the way, you will also improve your language skills, since Spanish is the only language spoken on the farms.

The real country life

Even though you might not think so, Latin Americans are often far ahead of us in their thinking and ideas. Even though agriculture often takes place on a smaller scale, innovation is a big deal here. That’s because, especially in smaller communities, people depend on a working, sustainable and genuine agriculture. And the emphasis is on not harming the environment and giving back to it and the communities. You will learn a lot about sustainable agriculture and develop your own skills and abilities. You might even be able to use them in Germany.

Plants, animals or both?

On a farm you have the unique opportunity to enjoy the seclusion and pristine nature. Lonely, incomparable landscapes determine your everyday life here. You have time to reflect and think about what you want to achieve in your life, where you want to go and what is important to you. At the same time, working with the locals, you will also realize what really counts in life: Helpfulness, cohesion and gratitude.

There is something for everyone on our farmstays, and you can pursue your personal interests and desires. You have a fascination for plants and physical work? You will have the opportunity to grow and harvest your own fruits, vegetables and other plants. Or do you prefer to take care of animals in need? Dogs, cats and other animals in need of help are waiting for you. If you are a true horse lover, you can also finally pursue your passion on a horse ranch on a daily basis. You can help with the horse care, muck out the stable or train the horses and go for rides with the guests.

LANGUAGE COURSE

Do I need to know Spanish?

Depending on the level of your existing Spanish knowledge, we recommend that you take a language course at the beginning of your program to acquire some basic knowledge or to refresh your knowledge.

Generally, basic knowledge of Spanish is sufficient on our farms and you can learn it on the spot without any previous knowledge. However, these basic skills are very important to complete your project successfully and to enjoy your trip to the fullest. This is especially important for farm work, as on many farms you will be working with locals from rural areas who unfortunately do not have the academic opportunities to learn English or other languages. Therefore, communication is mainly in Spanish. However, on most farms there is at least one person and the other volunteers with whom you can also communicate in English. With a little curiosity, you will learn the language quickly.

Language courses:

Since farms are usually located in a small village, it is recommended that you take an intensive 2-week language course in a larger town at the beginning of your trip before you start your farm work. The 2-week course consists of 20 lessons per week in a small group of international students.

If the farm is located near a city, and you live in the city, you can take your language course at the same time as your farm work. In this case, the course includes 10 lessons per week. This is possible during a farm stay in Guatemala.

Language schools:

We have carefully selected our partner language schools in each location and checked them against our standards. We work with smaller language schools that are not concerned with masses of students, but rather focus on personalized attention and quick learning. They are typically very family-oriented institutions. In addition to classes, the schools offer extracurricular activities where you will quickly connect with your fellow students as well as the Latin American culture. Go salsa dancing with the other volunteers, or take a cooking class and learn how to prepare local specialties.

All our language schools are centrally located and within walking distance of your accommodation.

You can find out more about our language courses and language schools here.
