Our participants are out almost every weekend exploring the area, climbing volcanoes or visiting lakes and waterfalls. You want to get to know the culture of the Maya? HOSTELS IN GUATEMALA

Our partner hostels are located in the center of Antigua and directly on the picturesque beach of El Paredon. They vary in size and all have a different character. There are party hostels, where every night travelers from all over the world meet and dance until the morning hours. But there are also some boutique hostels that attract a more quiet crowd. In most hostels, people sit together in the evening at the hostel’s own bar and chat.

The hostels in Guatemala are designed with great attention to detail. The owners of the hostels are often European or South American immigrants who have decorated the hostels according to their taste. Much of it was made by hand by local artists. The style of their home country is mixed with Guatemalan handicrafts.

Our partner hostels in downtown Antigua are within walking distance of the central square, many restaurants and places to go out. The hostel in El Paredon is located directly on a picturesque and black sand beach, which invites you to experience beautiful sunsets every evening.

In the hostel in Antigua there is a shared kitchen where you can cook with your colleagues or new friends, a lounge and a terrace. Often there is a foosball or billiards table or hammocks available and from time to time there is also a bar in the hostel. The hostel in El Paredon also has a large pool, a beach restaurant and you also have the possibility to use the in-house surfing equipment.

Many hostels offer additional activities for guests, such as sightseeing tours, salsa classes, parties and bar hopping.

Antigua is our favorite city in Guatemala and it makes the heart of every traveler beat faster. The positive atmosphere of this city is unique. Antigua is beautiful and impressive in many ways. Be enchanted by colorful houses, cobblestone streets and many small stores, restaurants and cafes. The city is a magnet for young people from all over the world, and many who have traveled here have stayed. The surrounding volcanoes offer a spectacular view and invite you to climb them. In the surroundings of Antigua you will find many coffee and organic farms to visit. The owners of the countless restaurants, cafes, bars and hostels come from all over the world, which is why there is a large international community. In the bars you will hear 1,000 different languages and quickly you will have made new friends all over the globe. In Antigua, different cultures meet, especially impressive are the descendants of the ancient Maya, who sell handicrafts, cook delicious street food and share their culture.

Besides the work in the project, Antigua offers many opportunities for colorful leisure activities. An ascent of the surrounding volcanoes is an experience you will probably never forget. Equally worthwhile is a weekend trip to Lake Atitlan.

El Paredon is the most popular beach town on Guatemala’s Pacific coast and has made a name for itself as one of the best surf destinations in Central America – if you know about it, of course. The small town offers everything a traveler’s heart desires. On the endlessly long and black sandy beach, many young people gather in the evening to let the day end together with incomparable sunsets. The perfect place to make new friends with young people from all over the world. There are also many small local restaurants that have a lot to offer in terms of culinary. The place is perfect for enjoying the tranquility of the sea, taking surfing lessons or even visiting a beach bar in the evening. Let yourself be surprised and have an unforgettable time.

Our partner hostel is located directly on the beach and you can reach the place in about two hours drive from Antigua.

REQUIREMENTS

For your work in a hostel you don’t need any special qualifications or experience. It is only important that you have a desire to learn and you are open to a new culture, people from all over the world and a new way of life. You should be motivated, work well in a team and be willing to share your living space with other people for a while. In return you can expect a unique community, a life in breathtaking nature and above all a lot of fun at work. Also, it is important that you are not too shy to do the tasks in a hostel. Everyone pitches in and if there is a lot going on, it can take a little longer.

LANGUAGE

The national language in Guatemala is Spanish. You do not need to know Spanish to participate in the program. It is only required that you can speak English or Spanish to communicate with the other volunteers from all over the world and the hostel staff. A Spanish course is included at the beginning of the program. Your language skills will also improve on the spot.

ACCOMODATION

You will live in a shared room with other volunteers from all over the world. The room is located in the hostel where you also work, sometimes there is also an apartment for volunteers located near the hostel.

You will usually share the room with your colleagues, in smaller hostels you may also share with guests.

The room size also varies depending on the hostel, usually there are between 4 and 10 beds in your room.

You will have a well-equipped kitchen at your disposal, where you can cook together with the other volunteers. In some hostels there are one or even two meals per day for the volunteers, but we cannot guarantee this.

Alejandro is Guatemalan and grew up in Antigua. Therefore, he knows the city, the country and its culture like no other. He has a great passion for Germany, has visited there several times and speaks the language fluently. Alejandro always has an open ear for your wishes and is happy to introduce you to his home country. He will gladly organize city tours and weekend excursions for our participants. You will never feel alone. Through his history studies, he can tell you a lot about the history of Guatemala and the ancient buildings in Antigua. Ale will take care of you during your orientation in Antigua. For questions of any kind during your stay in Latin America, an English-speaking contact person is available via WhatsApp in the same time zone.
