FARM EXPERIENCE PERU

HORSE RANCH

The happiness of the earth lies… on the back of Peruvian Paso horses, of course! In the midst of the endless nature in the north of the country, a Peruvian-Swiss couple has built a ranch where they keep, care for and ride the horses. Horses in need as well as street dogs and stray cats are also cared for and fostered by the owners and volunteers. You, too, can get to know Peru’s rural life up close and live your passion. Support in the care of the animals and the execution of the tours, and become a horse whisperer yourself!

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Horses are your passion and you can’t imagine anything better than living on a real horse ranch and getting your hands dirty? Or do you have no experience with the animals yet, but always wanted to learn how to ride? Here it doesn’t matter if you are already a professional on horseback or an interested beginner – you can spend a lot of time on the back of fascinating animals if you want to.

On our horse ranch in a small and idyllic village in the north of Peru you have the unique opportunity to learn horse riding or to further develop your skills. And not on just any horses, but on the world famous Peruvian Paso horses. There are quite a few of them on the farm. A Swiss-Peruvian couple runs the farm, where you can expect pure rural atmosphere in the midst of beautiful and impressive nature.

Besides horses, the farm also keeps cows, chickens and ducks. In addition, the operators of the farm also help horses in need and street dogs and cats. They shelter the abandoned animals, sterilize them, cure them and find them new homes.

In the surroundings of the farm there are exciting sights of the Inca culture, which can be explored on horseback. From time to time tourists visit the farm and book excursions with the horses. You can accompany them on a tour, for example to pyramids from the Inca period.

TASKS

On the farm there are different areas of responsibility, and (almost) everything revolves around the horse. You will take care of the Peruvian Paso horses and assist in training the elegant animals. Of course, you will also spend a lot of time on the horses’ backs. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or a professional, here everyone can get involved according to their own abilities and quickly develop them. A unique opportunity to combine work with passion. Then the time flies by.

In addition, there are other activities on the farm where you can lend a hand. The operators of the farm also help horses in need and street dogs and cats. They shelter the abandoned animals, sterilize them, cure them and find them new homes. You can support them and take care of the dogs and cats as well as the other animals on the farm. If you want, you can also help with the work in the fields and the maintenance of the farm.

From time to time tourists book a tour with the horses, for example to the archaeological sites of the Incas. You can accompany them on the horseback tours. You will become a Peru expert yourself and get to know the country from a very special side.

PACORA

In the surroundings of the farm you will find an idyllic rural atmosphere in the middle of nature, beautiful landscapes and impressive archaeological sites from the pre-Inca and Inca times. The village center of Pacora is only a five minute walk away. It is located on the north coast of Peru in the province of Lambayeque, only an hour bus ride from Chiclayo. You can visit the city of Chiclayo in your free time and explore the beaches in the area. The bus connection to Chiclayo is very good during the day. But also in the village of Pacora itself there are pharmacies, butchers, bakers and various stores where you can get almost everything. In the idyllic village it is very familiar. Everyone knows everyone here. There is a nice swimming pool 5 minutes by bus from the farm. About 7 hours north you will reach the probably most beautiful beaches of Peru in Máncora, which are perfect for a longer trip, there you can watch whales and swim with turtles. You can also reach the Andean city of Cajamarca in 7 hours by bus, there the last Inca king was captured by the Spanish. You can see many sights, go trekking in the Andes as well as bathe in the Inca thermal baths. A little further away, accessible by night bus, you can visit Chachapoyas, there is an Inca temple (Kuelap) as well as the highest falling waterfall in the world, the Gocta waterfall. Or you can travel, also by night bus, to Tarapoto in the jungle. There you can do jungle tours and visit a lagoon.

REQUIREMENTS

You don’t need any special qualifications for the job at the farm. If you have a big heart for horses and other animals, a positive attitude and enthusiasm, you will love volunteering at the horse ranch. Even if you have never been on a horse before, it is not a problem. The animals are very docile and if you feel like it, you can learn to ride very quickly. If you already have experience with horses, you may take on more responsible tasks, such as training the Paso horses.

Of course, you should not be afraid to get your hands dirty, you will live on the farm and will be involved in the daily work.

LANGUAGE

The national language in Peru is Spanish. The farm is run by a Swiss-Peruvian couple. Therefore, you have the advantage of having a German-speaking contact person directly on the farm. However, since you will be working with locals who do not speak German, you should have some basic knowledge to be able to communicate with them. If you don’t have any knowledge yet, we recommend a language course at the beginning of the trip, which we will gladly organize for you.

ACCOMODATION

You will live directly on the farm in a room or bungalow, which is located next to the family’s residential building. You will live either in a single room or a double room with another participant.

From Monday to Saturday you will eat together in the kitchen three times a day. In the morning the participants prepare their own breakfast. In the evening the owner of the farm cooks, and at noon a cook prepares the meal. On Sundays the meals are not included, of course you are free to use the fully equipped kitchen.

A washing machine is available on site for a fee of 1€ per wash.
