FARM EXPERIENCE GUATEMALA

Our Eco-friendly farm in the heart of Guatemala is unique! Lush greenery and vibrant nature as far as the eye can see. Impressive and innovative ideas are creatively implemented here. We always admire the energy, love, and lust for life that the founder, his staff, and volunteers put into this magical place. The goal is to build a sustainable and viable farm, care for animals in need, and build a safe place for locals to gather with friends and family. On the farm, you can contribute your own strengths and interests and take on a wide variety of tasks. Realize art projects, help grow vegetables, practice beekeeping, or care for the cats and puppies. Fun and leisure time are not neglected here either – we cook together, laugh together and organize cool activities. You’ll never forget the community you’ll find here, and you’ll take the people of the farm to your heart forever.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Our eco-friendly farm is located on the outskirts of Antigua, our favorite city in Guatemala – and makes the heart of every nature fan and creative mind beat faster. The farm has set itself the goal to establish a sustainable and sustainable agriculture and to grow and sell their own products. In the process, they also care for animals in need and foster puppies, horses and other animals. The farm is a place of community, a reliable meeting place and a safe workplace for many locals and volunteers. In this way, young Guatemalans in particular are taught skills that will then help them move forward in their own lives and in society.

The idea of self-sufficiency is implemented on the farm in a creative, innovative and modern way. For example, they grow and manage their own food and build a sustainable water supply system using rainwater and groundwater – all with the help of a specially created energy supply system using solar energy. In the long term, the model of the farm will serve as a model for other farms in Guatemala, improving the general standard of living of many Guatemalans through the creation of jobs and the sale of food.

Do you enjoy taking care of animals? Many animals such as horses, donkeys and birds, as well as puppies, are cared for and nurtured on the farm. In addition, there is a small apiary where you can gain your first experience in the production of honey.

On the farm, everyone can contribute their own strengths and skills, regardless of whether you are already talented at handicrafts or would like to learn something new. Creativity is often called for, as fascinating art projects are always being designed and implemented at the farm. The days fly by, and working together brings the farm community even closer together.

And not only that – the founders of the farm are also involved with socially disadvantaged youth and run a football club. Soccer is not only the most popular sport in Guatemala, but it also gives young people the chance to develop discipline and ambition. You like to play soccer yourself? Then you can certainly learn a thing or two here – or show the locals how it’s done. In addition to soccer, other sports are also in focus – volleyball tournaments are held regularly, and you can help organize them.

Besides your work on the farm you have the possibility to participate in different courses (e.g. yoga) or workshops and thus gain valuable experience, learn a lot and maybe discover a new hobby.

For us the farm is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Nevertheless, the farm lives on donations, investors and volunteers. Be a part of this great project! Embark on a journey to beautiful Guatemala and experience an unforgettable time at the Eco-Farm.

TASKS

As a volunteer, you will not only positively change the lives of Guatemalans, but also your own. The experiences gained in this project are unforgettable and unique, and will accompany you for a long time in your life. You will work together with locals who earn their living on the farm. Here you will quickly make valuable contacts, enriching friendships and improve your Spanish skills.

The main task is the care and maintenance of the agriculture. Vegetables, mushrooms and many other plants are taken care of and the cultivation is constantly expanding. You help with the pulling and planting of new seedlings and finally also with the harvest. Here you also sometimes get your hands dirty and it can get exhausting.

In addition, various animals are taken in and cared for, often including puppies, which you can take care of. The newly established puppy sanctuary needs energetic support. The little ones need to be fed and cared for and are also happy to have a play partner. Besides the dogs, donkeys, horses, chickens and geese live on the farm, which you can take care of.

The farm runs its own food production and a small apiary. You can help out in the shop, selling the farm’s products and thus not only improve your Spanish skills, but also get in touch with locals.

Also, art projects are regularly implemented, for which your creativity is needed.

The tasks are very flexible and everyone can bring their own interests and skills into the workday. It doesn’t matter if you already have experience in gardening and farm work, if you like handicraft or creative work, if you prefer to deal with plants or animals – there is something for everyone and your help is very much appreciated.

ANTIGUA

Antigua is made for a work and travel adventure and makes the heart of every traveler beat faster. Not only the beauty of the city and the surrounding nature make the city so popular. Above all, it is the flair that prevails here. Antigua is a center of attraction for young people from all over the world – many of those who travelled here once, stayed right there. The owners of the countless restaurants, cafes, bars and hostels come from all over the world, so it is correspondingly international. In the bars you can hear 1,000 different languages and you quickly make new friends all over the globe.

Besides the work in the project, Antigua offers many possibilities for a colorful leisure time. Climbing the surrounding volcanoes is an experience you will probably never forget. Equally worthwhile is a weekend trip to Lake Atitlan.

REQUIREMENTS

For the job on the farm you don’t need any special previous knowledge. You should have the desire to work in nature and the motivation to improve agriculture in a sustainable way. Also, openness to new cultures is especially important to us. Living in a foreign country always requires a certain willingness to adapt, which will be very rewarding for your development.

LANGUAGE

The national language in Guatemala is Spanish. You will be dealing with locals who do not speak English. Therefore, a basic knowledge of Spanish is of course an advantage, but not a prerequisite to participate in the project. You will automatically improve your language skills on site.

In order to acquire the necessary knowledge and to be well prepared for the successful execution of your project, we recommend that you take a Spanish course in advance or at the same time. The course as well as the accommodation during the language course are not included in the program.

A basic knowledge of English is essential for the communication between the volunteers and the management.

You can choose whether you would prefer to stay in a guesthouse or with a Guatemalan host family.

Our guesthouse is located on the outskirts of Antigua. Here you can choose to stay in a shared room with other participants and guests or in a single room. The shared rooms have a private bathroom, up to four single beds, a sofa and a desk. The single room shares the bathroom with two other people; it is located in the hallway right next to the room.

The guesthouse has a nice common area and a kitchen where the volunteers enjoy cooking together. The highlight is the large roof terrace from which you can observe the surrounding volcanoes.

At the eco-farm, a daily lunch from Monday to Friday is included in the program. The shared kitchen in the guesthouse is available for breakfast and dinner.

The center of Antigua can be reached in a few minutes on foot. There are many restaurants, bars and cafes in the area. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the farm.

Depending on availability, you will live in the guesthouse or comparable accommodation.

Our host families are personally selected by us. You live in a single room with the family and usually share a bathroom. Meals are included from Monday to Friday. All host families live in Antigua and the farm is within walking distance.

EXPERIENCE REPORTS

Liv

“I can only advise everyone to embark on this adventure. Far too often, people stay in their familiar surroundings or don’t trust themselves to do something. I learned that it pays to jump over your own shadow.”
