PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Our partner organization in the beautiful colonial city of Oaxaca was founded over 25 years ago by an American couple. Driven by the vision of giving Mexican street children access to education and thus the chance of a hopeful future, the project today cares for over 600 children and young people from poor backgrounds, as well as their families.
In the state of Oaxaca, there are unfortunately still many children who live in great poverty, have no access to education, and whose families often cannot spend enough time with them due to adversity. Despite the beauty of this region, Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico. For many young people living there, an education is a dream that is difficult to achieve. Our partner organization is located in a colonial-style townhouse and has therefore set itself the goal of providing extensive support in various educational areas to children and young people in need. In addition, the children there receive a hot meal every day.
In addition to the food program, they have access to social services, tutoring, a library and medical care. The program also provides the children with school supplies and uniforms, funded by numerous donations.
By participating in the program, you will have the unique opportunity to do your part to enrich the lives of many people while putting a smile on the faces of children. You will learn a lot about Mexican life and culture, gain many exciting experiences and find out a lot about yourself. Together with your support we will shape the future in a colorful way.
TASKS
As a volunteer in the aid project in Oaxaca, you will actively support all tasks that arise in the context of care. You will quickly become a person of respect and trust for the children and young people, which is why you should carry out your role with a sense of responsibility.
Your tasks on site are individual and varied. The project is perfect for you to use your skills and preferences in a targeted way. On the one hand, you will assist with homework so that the children do not fall behind in school. Here you can demonstrate your didactic skills and explain and teach them new things to make them want to learn even more. With a little creativity and fun, the tasks will take care of themselves and you’ll have just as much fun.
You can also teach the children the English language and how to use the computer. If you yourself had one or more favorite subjects at school, you can also create special tutoring courses for them. Especially, the field of mathematics is becoming more and more popular. The topics do not only have to relate to the school itself. For example, if you have a great interest in photography, you can also get involved in this area. There are a variety of options and no matter what you choose, do it with passion and empathy.
Free time should not be neglected. The project has a large library with many children’s books that you can browse through with the children. In this way, you will also improve your language skills playfully. There is also a table tennis table and other outdoor activities. Do you love to live out your artistic side? The children will be very happy if you work on different art projects with them. Your individual ideas are in demand!
If you like to cook, you can also assist in the in-house kitchen and help to serve the children a delicious and balanced lunch, which they get prepared every day.
Oaxaca
Do you want to get to know the real Mexico with all its traditions? Then Oaxaca is the perfect place for you, not only because of its very good security situation. It is, in our eyes, one of the coolest cities in the country and has so much to offer that makes the heart of every traveler beat faster. The appearance of the city is characterized by colorful houses and cobblestone streets. It is teeming with hip cafés, galleries, churches and museums. Spring-like temperatures prevail almost all year round, inviting you to go exploring.
Your culinary well-being is also taken care of. This corner of the world has many traditional, as well as modern restaurants and bars, which are characterized by excellent quality. Due to the local delicacies, the region is a true mecca for gourmets. At the markets you can find impressive handicrafts, regional chocolate and superior coffee, among other things. Want to do something crazy and try grasshoppers? These markets give you the opportunity to do so. Your stay in Oaxaca will never be boring.
If you feel like a day trip, there are some exciting attractions in the area that you can visit. One of them is the petrified waterfall Hierve el Aqua, which is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in the state. Besides an unforgettable swimming experience, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the local mountains, and their vegetation. Furthermore, the stay is perfect for a visit to the important archaeological site of Monte Albán, where you can admire historical temples and pyramids.

REQUIREMENTS
You don’t need any special requirements to work in the project. The most important thing is that you have a heart for children and young people and want to support them. Since they often speak no or very little English, depending on their age, it is an advantage if you already have some basic knowledge of Spanish. This facilitates a trustful communication on both sides. However, your sincere interest is in the foreground. Open-hearted, sensitive and motivated participants are always welcome. Furthermore, you should have the desire to get to know a new culture, to make new contacts and friendships, as well as the willingness to leave your comfort zone. Since some of the people responsible for the project speak fluent English, you will always have a suitable contact person on site who will help you with words and deeds. Especially for your own life, you will gain experiences that will leave a lasting impression on you in a positive sense.
LANGUAGE
The national language in Mexico is Spanish. You will be around a lot of kids who don’t know English. A basic knowledge of Spanish is definitely an advantage. If you do not have any knowledge of Spanish at the moment, we recommend that you take a language course, which we will gladly organize for you. You can take the language course before or during your time in the project.
ACCOMODATION
During your time in the project, you will live in a shared apartment directly in the center of Oaxaca. Here you will have a kitchen at your disposal together with your roommates. The apartment is only a few minutes away from the project location. So you can walk to work in the morning.
YOUR CONTACT IN MEXICO
Bianca is Mexican herself and originally from Cancún. She has traveled a lot and lived in many different places in Mexico. Currently she lives in the dream destination Playa del Carmen. Bianca has already worked in tourism during her studies in Central Mexico, so she knows the country and the people very well and can answer all your questions. She has also worked on cruise ships for several years and has traveled around the world and therefore knows people from all over the world. Despite the many other impressions, Bianca loves her country and the culture of Latin America very much and is happy to show you around her home country. For Bianca, the diversity of countries makes Latin America an exciting travel destination and she especially likes the culture and history of the peoples.
