For stays of up to 90 days, you generally do not need a visa for Guatemala. Instead, you will receive an entry stamp in your passport on arrival and can enter the country directly with your Volunteer project or Work and Travel start.
Do I need a visa for Guatemala?
You do not need a visa for Guatemala for tourist stays as long as you are not in the country for longer than 90 days. This also applies to our Work and Travel and Volunteering Programs without payment, as we offer at WanderWorld Travel.
Many of our participants are involved in local social or ecological projects and work, for example, with Children and young people, support schools or help in the Animal and nature conservation. As you do not receive a salary, you can easily participate with tourist status.
Good to know: Guatemala belongs to the so-called CA-4 region. This also includes El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. The 90 days apply to all four countries together. So if you travel to several of these countries, your total length of stay will be calculated in combination.
Requirements for entry
Even if you do not need a visa, there are some important requirements for entering Guatemala.
Your passport should be valid for at least six months. In many cases, a return or onward travel ticket is also required. You may also have to show proof of sufficient financial means and your accommodation.

If you would like to stay longer in Guatemala, you have the option of extending your stay on site. To do this, contact the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración.
As a rule, you can extend your stay by a further 90 days. The extension is subject to a fee and should be applied for in good time before the end of your first stay.
Important to know: There is no guarantee that your stay will be extended. So it's best to plan with a bit of a buffer.
When you need a visa
A visa is required if you wish to stay in Guatemala for longer than 90 days or for a purpose other than tourism.
This includes, for example, paid work, studies or training as well as a longer-term stay in the country.
In these cases, you must apply for a visa or residence permit in advance.
Responsible authorities
If you are planning to stay in Guatemala for longer than 180 days or to work or study there, you will need a visa. You can apply for this via the Guatemalan diplomatic missions abroad, for example at the Embassy of Guatemala in Berlin.
The application can take some time and requires various documents. It is best to allow several weeks for this.

As a rule, Austria does not have its own embassy, which is why a representation abroad is often responsible. Honorary consulates can provide you with initial information, but are usually not responsible for the actual issuing of visas.
