Visas for Latin America - everything you need to know

If you are planning a short trip, dream vacation or long-term stay in Latin America, it is important to know the visa and entry requirements of the various countries in advance so that nothing can go wrong. Are you looking for a trip, Work & Travel stay, Volunteering or a Language course in one of the fascinating countries of Latin America? Then we have all the information you need to know about entering the country. In this blog post, we give you an overview of the visa and entry requirements for six popular destinations in Latin America: Costa Rica, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia and Peru.

First of all, we can reassure you: Citizens of EU countries and Switzerland can enter Latin America without having to apply for a visa in advance. You can simply enter the country as a tourist and receive the Tourist visa stamped in your passport. You don't have to apply for anything in advance and the tourist visa is free of charge. All the more reason to travel to Latin America instead of opting for work and travel in the USA or Australia!

Most Latin American countries offer entry with a tourist visa for up to 90 days, Costa Rica and Mexico even up to 180 days.

We give you a comprehensive overview here so that you are well informed for your trip!

Please note that entry requirements can change at any time. You should therefore check the current regulations on the website of the Federal Foreign Office or the respective national authority before your departure.

General information for entry

Before we look at the specific visa requirements of the individual countries, here are some general tips that apply to all Latin American countries:

  • Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry.
  • Exit ticket: Many countries require proof of a booked return or onward ticket by air.
  • First address: It may be necessary to provide an address in the country when entering the country.
  • International health insurance: Proof of valid international health insurance should be carried.
  • Credit card: A credit card to prove that you have sufficient funds (with at least 1,000 euros in credit).
  • Transit visas: If you have a transit in the USA or Canada on your flight, you must submit an electronic entry application in advance, the ESTA visa for the USA and the eTA visa for Canada. It is better to take care of your transit visa early to avoid time stress shortly before departure.
  • Yellow fever vaccination: A yellow fever vaccination may be required when entering the country from yellow fever areas. No yellow fever vaccination is required if you are entering the country directly from Germany. However, if you are flying from Colombia to Costa Rica, for example, you should have a yellow fever vaccination and the corresponding proof of vaccination.
  • Entry by land: Make sure that you receive an entry stamp in your passport when you enter the country by land to avoid problems when you leave the country.

Mexico is also a particularly friendly destination, as travelers from EU countries and Switzerland with a tourist visa for 180 days can stay. You often have to present a return or onward travel ticket.

Visa Panama

Panama allows nationals of EU countries and Switzerland to stay in the country for up to 90 days. A booked return or onward ticket by flight from a Central American country must be presented on entry.

Visa Peru

In Peru, from EU countries and Switzerland, you can also pay up to 90 days enter the country with a tourist visa. As a tourist, you cannot spend more than 183 days per year in Peru. Here is some important information:

  • Entry control: Your entry and residence data are recorded electronically and not noted in your passport.
  • Onward/return flight tickets: You often have to present a return or onward flight ticket.
  • Duration of stay: Exceeding the duration of stay of 90 days leads to a fine of currently 5 PEN (1.25 €) per day. This must be paid at the airport on departure.

Visas Guatemala

Guatemala also offers citizens of EU countries and Switzerland a tourist visa for stays of up to 90 days. However, note specific requirements:

  • Digital declaration of the traveler: The digital declaration "Declaración Jurada del Viajero" must be submitted before entering the country. You can download the declaration at this link and print or save the QR code you receive.
  • Onward/return tickets: You will often need to present a return or onward ticket.
  • Yellow fever vaccination: Proof of vaccination is required for entry from yellow fever areas.

Visa Colombia

In Colombia, you can also apply from EU countries and Switzerland for 90 days with the possibility of extending this stay for a further 90 days. Please note the following:

  • Health form: The "Check-Mig" health form is online before departure under this link to be filled in.
  • Onward/return tickets: You will often need to present a return or onward ticket.
  • Yellow fever vaccination: When entering the country from Angola, Brazil, Congo or Uganda, proof of vaccination must be provided.
  • Extension of stay: As soon as you are in Colombia, you can apply online to the Migración Colombia for an extension of another 90 days before the first 90 days have expired. It is best to do this after the first 1.5 months have expired.

What if I want to stay longer?

The tourist visa period is not enough for you and you would like to stay longer? In this case, you can do a so-called "visa run". This involves leaving the country, for example to a neighboring country. You should wait around 72 hours and then re-enter your destination country. As a rule, the tourist visa period of 90 or 180 days is granted again. Please note, however, that you must present proof of departure in the form of a booked return or onward ticket for re-entry.

Entry by land

Many work and travelers choose to travel to several Latin American countries by land rather than by plane. When doing so, you should make sure that you cross the border at an official border station and get an exit stamp when leaving the country as well as an entry stamp in your passport when entering the country. Otherwise this can lead to problems when you leave the country. Some countries charge a fee or tax on entry; this is always included in airline tickets, but must be paid separately on land. It is best to always have 50 US dollars in cash with you.

Conclusion

A long-term stay in Latin America is an exciting opportunity to experience new cultures and gain unforgettable experiences. By informing yourself about the visa and entry requirements and preparing well, you can ensure that your trip goes smoothly. You can spend three months in the beautiful dream countries without having to apply for a visa in advance, and even half a year in Costa Rica and Mexico. And the best thing is: the tourist visa is free of charge and you only need to present proof of departure.
