Your ultimate travel guide to Machu Picchu - from Cusco

Machu Picchu is the legendary Inca city and is at the top of many people's bucket list. There are various ways to get there from Cusco, depending on your budget, time and sense of adventure. We are happy to provide you with some of our favorite options and important tips for your trip!

 

How do you get from Cusco to Machu Picchu?

By train - convenient & fast

The easiest and fastest option is the train. There are two providers: PeruRail and Inca Rail - Both offer different comfort classes, from basic to luxury.

  • Direct train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes
    If you are traveling in the dry season (April to October), you can travel directly from the train station Cusco San Pedro or Poroy to Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo). The journey takes around 3-4 hours and offers breathtaking views.
  • Combined route: Bus + train via Ollantaytambo
    In the rainy season (November to March) or when train services are limited, you first travel by bus or cab to Ollantaytambo (approx. 1.5-2 hours) and then take the train to Aguas Calientes (another 1.5 hours). This route is cheaper and gives you the opportunity to explore the beautiful Sacred Valley.

 

On foot - on the path of the Incas

If you're in the mood for a real adventure, one of the Trails is just the thing for you. There are various multi-day hikes that take you through impressive Andean landscapes and past ancient Inca sites.

 

Via the famous Inca Trail

  • Classic route: 4 days / 3 nights - perfect combination of nature & history
  • Short route: 2 days / 1 night - if you don't have that much time
  • ImportantThe Inca Trail is very limited! It is essential to book several months in advance.

 

About the Salkantay Trail

If you are looking for a challenging and less crowded hike, the Salkantay Trail the perfect choice. This multi-day trekking tour takes you through spectacular landscapes, past snow-capped peaks, highland passes and dense cloud forests. Compared to the Inca Trail, this route is not limited, which means that you can also book it at short notice.

  • Classic route5 days / 4 nights - a varied hike through different climate zones, including a breathtaking view of the 6,271 meter high Salkantay mountain.
  • Short route4 days / 3 nights - a shortened version for those who have less time.
  • HighlightThe trek leads through impressive landscapes and finally ends in Aguas Calientes, from where you will visit Machu Picchu the next morning.

 

TipThis hike requires a good level of fitness, as you reach altitudes of over 4,600 meters. Acclimatization in Cusco is highly recommended!

 

By mountain bike to Machu Picchu

If you're in the mood for adrenaline, you can take a Mountain bike tour to Machu Picchu do. This route combines various outdoor adventures such as downhill biking, trekking and even optional rafting or zipline experiences.

  • Classic tour3-4 days - Start in Cusco with an exciting downhill ride from over 4,000 meters into the jungle. Then continue on foot towards Aguas Calientes.
  • HighlightsSpectacular mountain roads, hot springs of Santa Teresa and optional ziplining for extra action.

 

AttentionThis route requires good cycling skills and should be booked with an experienced agency, as some sections are technically demanding.

 

The cheap alternative: via Hidroeléctrica & on foot

If you want to save money and have no problem with a long bus ride and hiking, the route via Hidroeléctrica ideal:

  1. Bus from Cusco to Hidroeléctrica (approx. 6-7 hours)
  2. Hike along the railroad tracks to Aguas Calientes (approx. 2-3 hours)

 

This option is significantly cheaper than the train, but also more strenuous. Especially in the rainy season, it can be dangerous due to landslides.

 

What tickets are available for Machu Picchu?

There are different ticket options for Machu Picchu, so make sure you choose the right one for your plans. The Standard ticket gives you access to the main site of Machu Picchu, but without access to the surrounding mountains. It is ideal if you want to explore the ruins without undertaking additional hikes.

If you want to do a challenging hike with spectacular views, you can buy the ticket for Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu book. Huayna Picchu is the famous steep mountain behind the ruins and the ascent takes about two hours. As this ticket is very popular, you should book it early. A quieter alternative is the ticket for Machu Picchu and the Machu Picchu mountain. This mountain is less well-known than Huayna Picchu, but also offers great views. The hike is longer but less steep and takes around three to four hours.

All tickets must be purchased in advance as visitor numbers are very limited. Especially for Huayna Picchu and the Inca Trail, places fill up quickly. It is advisable to choose one of the earliest tickets so that you have the opportunity to experience the sunrise over Machu Picchu.

 

Final tips for your Machu Picchu adventure

Book tickets early - Machu Picchu has a limited number of visitors per day. Trains & buses are also often fully booked!
Best time to travel - April to October is dry but full of tourists. In the rainy season, it is emptier but wetter.
Acclimatization - Cusco lies at an altitude of 3,400 meters. Allow 1-2 days to get used to the altitude.
Packing list - Comfortable clothing, sun protection, insect repellent, water & snacks. Large backpacks are not allowed in Machu Picchu.
Don't forget your passport! - You need it to enter Machu Picchu.
