During your Spanish course in Antigua, you will receive 20 hours of individual lessons from Monday to Friday. The school is located in the center of Antigua and you can walk there from your accommodation. The teachers have over 10 years of teaching experience and tailor the individual language course to your needs and interests.

The lessons are tailored to each student's level and goals, intensifying your learning progress in a short period. The Spanish course also promotes intercultural exchange through activities such as cooking classes, dance evenings, and excursions.

The colorful colonial city of Antigua is our favorite place in Guatemala, and during your language trip, you can truly fall in love with this special location. The city is particularly popular among tourists due to its traditional markets and breathtaking colonial architecture. The cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and green parks give Antigua a unique flair.

Antigua is also surrounded by several volcanoes, which can be admired from the roof terraces. Brave travelers can also hike to the top of the volcano and camp there. The city offers numerous leisure options, restaurants, cafés, bars, markets, stores and museums and is also the perfect starting point for a trip to the beautiful Lake Atitlán or to Hobbitenango.

Your accommodation

The lovely guesthouse in Antigua has several single and shared rooms, a kitchen and cozy communal areas.

During your language course, you will stay in a single room with a shared bathroom and can relax on the beautiful rooftop terrace with your roommates. Many young travelers and volunteers stay at the modern guesthouse, making it easy for you to meet new people. If you don't feel like dining out at one of the numerous restaurants, you can cook your own meals in the communal kitchen.

The language school and the center of Antigua are within walking distance. In this quiet oasis on the outskirts of the city, you will quickly feel at home during your language journey.

Your daily routine

This is what a day could look like during your language study trip in Guatemala: When you wake up in the morning, you can pop into one of Antigua's delicious bakeries.

Your language course usually takes place with 4 hours of lessons in the morning between 08:00 and 13:00. Sometimes it is also possible to choose an afternoon course. The one-to-one lessons take place with a private teacher who adapts to your learning rhythm. During the lessons there are short breaks for a snack. The Spanish course offers a mixture of grammar units and interactive application to practise speaking from the very beginning.

The language schools also offer cultural activities to get to know other travelers and learn more about the Guatemalan way of life. You can attend a traditional cooking course, take a salsa dance class, go on an excursion to a coffee plantation or learn how to make woven textiles. Your first Spanish language skills from your language study trip will be put to use straight away.

Your free time

There are plenty of leisure activities in Antigua that can enrich your time between language courses. The city itself is rich in history and culture, so there are many interesting places to explore.

A popular activity in Antigua is exploring the numerous historical sights. You can visit the imposing ruins of Antigua Cathedral, stroll through the cobbled streets and admire the colonial architecture or explore the famous La Merced monastery.

For nature lovers, there are excursions into the surrounding countryside. You can climb the Pacaya volcano, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, or take a hike to the picturesque waterfalls of Santa Cruz.

If you like shopping, you should definitely visit the local craft market, where you can buy handmade souvenirs, handicrafts and traditional textiles.

For those who enjoy the nightlife, Antigua offers a variety of bars, restaurants and clubs where you can sample the local cuisine or dance the night away to live music and dancing.

LAGO ATITLÁN LANGUAGE SCHOOL, Guatemala

Your Spanish course at Lake Atitlán is located in the Maya village of San Juan. The school collaborates with local Spanish teachers and places great emphasis on learning the language as well as imparting Maya culture.

The Spanish course is conducted through individual lessons, offering a personal and rapid learning process. The lessons can take place either in the morning or afternoon. In good weather, classes are held not in a classroom but in nature. Surrounded by green coffee plants with a view of the lake, you are in a tranquil learning atmosphere that enhances your concentration.

The language school also engages in social projects to support the locals in San Juan, introducing students to traditions, cuisine, art, and the local Maya dialect "Tz’utujil."

Lago Atitlán is a must-see for anyone traveling to Guatemala! The clear and deep blue lake is surrounded by three mighty volcanoes and mountains. Surrounding the large lake are small villages, each with its own charm and tradition. To get from one place to another, you travel on the lake in small scheduled boats.

In the village of San Juan, where your Spanish course takes place, you'll find traditional Guatemalan handicrafts such as weaving, and you can observe women at work. In the neighboring village of San Pedro, the young backpacker scene gathers with lively nightlife for parties. Besides your Spanish course, you can enjoy your leisure time by the lake, stroll through markets, go hiking, or try out one of the numerous restaurants. Lake Atitlán offers opportunities for swimming, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Excursions to the famous Chichicastenango are also offered from there. The largest market in the country takes place there. The villages around the lake also offer you the opportunity to get to know many locals and their centuries-old traditions, such as traditional weaving.

Your accommodation

You will be staying with a local host family in San Juan. Your Spanish course is within walking distance. You'll have a shared room and your meals, consisting of three typical meals a day from Monday to Saturday, are included.

With the host family, you'll accelerate your Spanish learning to the next level and fully immerse yourself in Guatemalan culture during your language trip. The families' houses are typically Guatemalan, offering a familial environment where you'll never feel alone and can build connections with locals.

The host families are carefully selected and already have experience with language students from all over the world.

For the more adventurous, the lake also offers great opportunities for diving and snorkeling. Discover the fascinating underwater world of the lake with its clear waters and numerous species of fish.

If you want to explore the surrounding landscape, hiking is a great option. There are a variety of hiking trails with breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding volcanoes. The San Pedro volcano offers a challenging but rewarding hike with spectacular views of the lake from the summit.

For cultural experiences, you can visit the villages around the lake and get to know the local Mayan culture. Visit local markets where handicrafts and traditional textiles are sold, or take part in a Mayan cooking class to get to know the delicious Guatemalan cuisine.
