Project description

In the midst of the lush Rainforest of the Talamanca Mountains, just a short drive from Puerto Viejo, lies the finca. This regenerative farm is also a Education and Experimentation Center, where sustainable agriculture, community life, and the mindful use of natural resources are intertwined. The finca’s goal is not only to regenerate the soil and the surrounding ecosystem, but also to create a place where knowledge, relationships, and new ideas can flourish together.

During your time at the finca, you'll gain practical insight into regenerative agriculture, ecological cycles, and a largely self-sufficient lifestyle. The farm operates without harmful chemicals and places special emphasis on healthy soils, biodiversity, and a balanced relationship with nature. In its own biolab, the team focuses, among other things, on soil microbiology, the isolation of microorganisms, and the production of natural fertilizers. Organic byproducts from the surrounding area are processed, for example, into mulch or biochar and returned to agricultural cycles as valuable resources.

Permaculture ethics form the foundation of the entire project: Take care of the Earth, take care of people, and share surpluses fairly. This approach is also reflected in the close collaboration with the local community. The finca primarily employs people from the neighborhood, sources food and materials not produced on-site primarily from small family-run businesses, and collaborates with a technical school in Bribri. At the same time, 95 percent of the farmland is designated as a protected nature reserve received. Through your involvement, you’ll not only be supporting the finca’s day-to-day operations, but also a project that combines ecological regeneration, local collaboration, and community learning.

Tasks

Your day at the finca begins early in the morning, accompanied by the sounds of the surrounding rainforest. Five days a week, you’ll help out with the project’s various tasks for about five hours each day. Your specific role will depend on what work needs to be done at the time and which area best suits your interests and skills.

With the Fieldwork You’ll be directly connected to nature and food production on the finca. You’ll help maintain the regenerative farming systems, harvest food, and prepare the fresh produce for further processing. In the process, you’ll gain practical insights into organic gardening, tropical agroforestry, and the natural cycles of a regenerative farm. Planting a tree or tending to the chickens may also be part of your daily routine.

A particular focus of the finca is on the Restoration of Healthy Soils. Through daily work and various educational opportunities, you can learn more about composting, soil microbiology, and the production of natural fertilizers. Organic byproducts from the surrounding area—including sawdust, coconut husks, and wood scraps—are put to good use on the farm. These are transformed, for example, into mulch, biochar, and other natural materials that provide the soil with moisture and valuable organic matter.

Depending on the application, you can also choose from sustainable construction and maintenance work help out. This includes repairs, maintenance work, and new creative installations that contribute to the farm’s further development. At the Biolab, practical agriculture and scientific approaches come together. Among other things, the team here studies soil microorganisms and produces organic fertilizers for the crops.

Common areas also play an important role in everyday life. In the area of Hospitality & Home Care You'll welcome new volunteers and guests, help them settle in, and keep the living and common areas clean, organized, and functional. If you enjoy photography, videography, or storytelling, you can also use the finca as Content Creator support them and authentically document their daily lives, their projects, and their growth.

Shared meals are an integral part of community life. Breakfast and lunch are prepared by the farm’s cook Monday through Friday. For dinner and on weekends, the community prepares meals together. As many ingredients as possible are sourced directly from our own harvest. Once the work is done, your afternoons are your own. You can rest, explore the forest trails and the river, or take part in additional learning sessions. This way, every day at the finca combines hands-on work, communal living, and valuable insights into Permaculture and Regenerative Agriculture.

Program location

( TALAMANCA / LIMON )

The project is in the Talamanca Region in Limón Province, nestled in the lush green landscape of Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean region. The finca is located in the lush Talamanca Mountains, just a short drive from Puerto Viejo. Dense tropical vegetation, diverse wildlife, and direct access to a river create a peaceful environment where you’ll feel especially close to nature from day one.

Talamanca is one of Costa Rica’s most ecologically and culturally diverse regions. The expansive mountainous landscape is characterized by tropical rainforests, rivers, and extraordinary biodiversity. Parts of the Talamanca mountain range, together with the transboundary La Amistad National Park, are designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The region is also home to Indigenous communities, particularly the Bribri and Cabécar, whose culture and close ties to the Talamanca region continue to shape the area to this day. Along the Caribbean coast, there are also strong Afro-Caribbean influences, which are reflected, among other things, in the region’s music, language, culinary traditions, and way of life.

Life on the finca follows the rhythm of nature. The days begin early with the sounds of the rainforest and are shaped by the tropical climate and the communal farm life. Outside of work hours, you can explore the finca’s forest trails, discover the diverse vegetation, or cool off in the river’s clear water. If you pay close attention, you’ll spot birds and other animals along the way that call the farm’s tropical surroundings home.

Although the finca is in a quiet and secluded location, you’re not completely cut off from your surroundings. On your days off, you can visit Puerto Viejo and the beaches along the southern Caribbean coast. This way, the project site combines the simple life in the heart of nature with the opportunity to experience the cultural diversity, coastal towns, and unique atmosphere of the Caribbean region.

This makes Talamanca the perfect destination for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, live more mindfully, and forge a deep connection with nature. The combination of rainforest, river landscapes, community life, and cultural diversity makes your time at the finca a truly special experience.

Prerequisites

Before your program begins, you'll sign a Disclaimer and Indemnification Agreement. By doing so, you confirm that you are aware that the finca is in a remote Off-Grid Project and that the work can be physically demanding. You also agree to comply with the applicable safety guidelines and to take responsibility for your own well-being during your stay.

You don't need any prior knowledge of agriculture or permaculture to participate. What's much more important is your Curiosity, openness, and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and get to work. The simple life in the heart of the rainforest is very different from your usual daily routine. That's why you should be adaptable, able to adjust to local conditions, and enjoy living in a community.

This project is a particularly good fit for you if you Sustainability, community, and a mindful approach to nature close to your heart. If you're ready to learn new things, contribute your own skills, and share responsibility with others, an intense and enriching experience awaits you at the finca.

Language

At the finca, we mainly Spanish spoken. However, thanks to the international volunteers, English is also part of everyday life. Knowledge of Spanish is not required to participate. What’s much more important is that you’re open to learning new things and reaching out to others across language barriers.

Living in a community offers you many opportunities to use your Spanish skills naturally in everyday life and improve them step by step. Attentive listening, open communication, and cultural exchange play an important role in this process. This creates a supportive environment where you can try new things, learn from one another, and connect with people from different countries.

Note: The fact that Spanish is the main language and that no knowledge of Spanish is required is not currently explicitly stated on the publicly accessible project website. If this information comes directly from the finca, you can use the paragraph as is.

Accommodation and meals

You live in a simple and cozy Bungalow, which was built from natural materials and blends harmoniously into the surrounding rainforest. The open design ensures natural ventilation and allows you to experience the sounds of the jungle with particular intensity. Depending on the program and the type of lodging booked, shared or private bungalows are available. The restrooms and outdoor showers are located near the accommodations and are shared facilities.

The finca follows a conscious Off-Grid Concept. Solar panels cover basic electricity needs, while fresh spring water and collected rainwater are used for drinking and daily use. Composting dry toilets help conserve water and convert waste into valuable resources. There is no electricity in the bungalows themselves. However, charging stations are available in the main house, and you can use the internet via Starlink if needed.

During your stay, you’ll receive three freshly prepared meals each day. The food is primarily vegetarian and, whenever possible, includes ingredients grown on the property. From Monday through Friday, the finca’s cook prepares breakfast and lunch. For dinner and weekend meals, the community takes turns cooking together. Cleaning up afterward is also part of daily community life. Vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary needs can be accommodated by prior arrangement.

Since space in the refrigerator is limited, personal food items cannot be stored there. A washing machine is also available for participants in the educational programs; however, due to limited solar power, it can only be used during daylight hours.

Life at the finca is simple, sustainable, and closely connected to nature. In the spacious common areas, you can chat with the other participants, eat together, or just relax. In addition, you have access to the Yoga Shala, the forest trails, and direct access to the river. Here, comfort comes not from luxury, but from a sense of community, a connection to nature, and the special experience of consciously simplifying one’s daily life for a while.
