In Costa Rica, our partner hostels are usually located in more natural and quieter locations. There is rarely a bar or restaurant in the hostel itself. Therefore, the main tasks are looking after the reception, cleaning the communal areas and organizing activities and tours.
At reception, you welcome guests and do the check-in. You will show them the rooms and common areas of the hostel and help them with any questions they may have. You will also take care of check-out and accept new reservations. Of course, you will be familiarized with the system at the beginning. A good command of English and a basic knowledge of Spanish are required at reception.
At the bar, you take the orders and make the drinks. It's always a lot of fun and you get to interact with the guests. You will also serve food and drinks and take payments.
Your social media skills can also be put to good use in the hostel when creating posts or blog articles. Many hostels also offer activities and tours for their guests, such as karaoke nights, beer pong, volleyball tournaments, boat trips and hikes. Here you can help promote and organize the activities.
As a volunteer, you will also help with simple cleaning tasks, such as emptying the garbage, sweeping the entrance, doing laundry and making sure that the communal areas are clean and tidy. Help in the communal kitchen to ensure that everything is put back in its place and that all guests have a clean kitchen. If the hostel offers breakfast, you can also help with the preparation in the kitchen or with serving the food.
Your job is also to look after the guests and do your bit to make them feel comfortable. It is therefore important that you are empathetic, open-minded and communicative. As the working hours can vary each week, you should also have a certain degree of flexibility.
