During the Hostel Experience, you not only work in a hostel, but it also becomes your new home. The hostels in Panama are furnished with attention to detail and exude a Caribbean flair. You are in a lively environment and yet the secluded nature and the sea are not far away. Our hostels are centrally located and you can reach everything on foot. They are also located in tourist areas where you will always meet other travelers from all over the world.
The hostels are furnished with various cozy communal areas and have a fully equipped kitchen. In the evening, we like to cook together, play cards or there are cool activities such as salsa evenings, karaoke and much more. Our partner hostels on Bocas del Toro offer you an exciting mix of paradisiacal nature and lively hostels with international tourists.
The activities vary depending on the hostel and can be varied. The working hours also vary depending on the area of responsibility, but the weekly working hours are usually between 21 and 30 hours. This leaves enough free time to explore the surrounding area. The exact allocation of tasks and working hours will be discussed with the hostel manager on site.
At reception, you are responsible for welcoming guests and carrying out check-in. You will accompany them to their rooms and show them the common areas of the hostel. You will be on hand to help guests with any questions and will also be responsible for check-out and accepting new reservations. At the beginning, you will of course be familiarized with the booking system. A good command of English and a basic knowledge of Spanish are required at reception.
If the hostel offers breakfast, you will also help with the preparation in the kitchen or with serving the food.
At the hostel, you can use your social media skills to create posts or blog articles. Many hostels also offer activities and tours for their guests, such as karaoke nights, beer pong, volleyball tournaments, boat trips and hikes. Here you can help with the promotion and organization of the activities.
As a volunteer, you will also help with simple cleaning tasks such as emptying the garbage, sweeping the entrance, washing laundry and ensuring that the communal areas are clean and tidy. You will also assist in the communal kitchen to ensure that everything is put back in its place and that all guests find a clean kitchen.
An important part of your job is to look after the guests and make them feel comfortable. It is therefore important that you are empathetic, open-minded and communicative. As the working hours can vary each week, a certain degree of flexibility is also required.

The province of Bocas del Toro is located very close to the border with Costa Rica and is a popular travel destination in Panama. Many backpackers and tourists make their way from the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica to Bocas del Toro to enjoy the beautiful islands, beaches and crystal-clear water. You cross the border to Panama by land and drive to Almirante. From here, the adventure begins and you take a boat to the island of Bocas del Toro, the paradise of the Caribbean! Bocas Town is the liveliest, with numerous hotels, hostels, restaurants, stores and bars with a lively nightlife. From there you can do all kinds of activities and excursions to other islands. Endless adventures await you: snorkel in the clear waters and discover a fascinating underwater world full of colorful corals and fish, surf the waves of the Caribbean, explore the hidden bays and secret lagoons, hike through dense rainforests, discover exotic animals and plants and enjoy the untouched nature that surrounds you. Bocas also offers party animals an extensive nightlife with bars, beach parties and dancing opportunities. The island and Bocas Town are manageable and you will soon know your way around and make new friends.
No specific qualifications or experience are required to work at the hostel. What is important is that you have a willingness to learn and are open to new cultural experiences and interacting with people from all over the world. You should be motivated to work in a team and be willing to share your living space with others for a certain period of time. In return, you can expect a unique community, the opportunity to live in a breathtaking environment and, above all, a lot of fun at work. It is equally important that you are prepared to take on all the tasks that arise in the hostel. Everyone helps out, and at busy times it can take a little longer.
The national language in Panama is Spanish. You should already have a basic knowledge of Spanish for the Hostel Experience. If you do not yet have any knowledge, we recommend taking a language course before the project. Just ask us about the options. However, your language skills will also improve playfully on site.
You live in a shared room with other volunteers and guests from all over the world. The room is located in the hostel where you also work.
The room size varies depending on the hostel, there are usually between 4 and 10 beds in your room.
There is a communal kitchen in the hostel where you can cook with your flatmates. The hostel may offer a free breakfast, but we cannot guarantee this.
In Costa Rica you will be accompanied by our Contact person Helena looks after her. She was born and grew up in San José, the capital of Costa Rica. She attended the German Humboldt School there and learned German. As a proud Latina, it is very important to her to show people traveling to Costa Rica her beautiful home country. As a local and experienced tour guide, she can tell you all about the Countrywhich Culturewhich History and the Nature in Costa Rica. During the Introductory event she welcomes you to San José and gives you an introduction to the concept that Costa Rica is known for: Pura Vida. Throughout your stay, you can contact her via WhatsApp if you have any questions or concerns. She will also be happy to give you travel tips and recommendations for your free travel time.
