The Wildlife Project near Cusco is a private and family-run organization dedicated to the rescue and care of native wildlife. The project takes in wild animals such as alpacas, parrots, pumas, turtles, eagles and wildcats that were previously kept as pets, mistreated or captured by poachers and illegal hunters for sale. The animals are rescued by forest rangers and brought into the care of the organization. The Wildlife Project was founded in 2007 and is home to many endangered species on the 15-hectare site, thus ensuring the conservation of special wild animals. Tourists and locals can visit the Wildlife Sanctuary and see for themselves the important work being done. On a tour of the site, they can learn all about the magnificent animals and gain an awareness of the importance of animal conservation.
The sanctuary is home to many different animal species, from bears, pumas and alpacas to birds and tortoises, and offers enclosures designed to meet the special needs of the animals. The focus of the sanctuary is on welfare, rehabilitation and, if possible, reintegration into their natural habitat.
The team is particularly concerned about the conservation of the endangered Andean condors. The gigantic condors were and still are hunted illegally in order to sell the coveted feathers to artisans or as souvenirs to tourists. The condors are bred there with the aim of releasing the giant birds into the wild and thus increasing the population.
The mission of the project is to make volunteers and visitors to the reserve aware of the devastating impact that human activity is having on the extinction of these special animals. They want to educate local people, especially children, about how they can contribute to the conservation of native species and thus strengthen people's sense of responsibility towards nature.
The Wildlife Sanctuary wants to be a role model for animal welfare in Peru and promote species-appropriate husbandry. This involves a great deal of work and every helping hand is welcome in the project. As a volunteer, you can mainly help with feeding and caring for the animals in the enclosures and support the guided tours for visitors through the sanctuary.
Help to Peruvian biodiversity to receive! The project is non-profit and runs on donations, visitor admissions and the help of volunteers. In the project, you can learn all about Peru's fascinating wildlife and have fun working with the animals, local staff and other volunteers. You can actively support the protection and welfare of wild animals and do something good for nature.
Als Volunteer kannst du auf der Auffangstation verschiedene Tätigkeiten übernehmen. Als Mitglied des lokalen Teams bist du für die Pflege und Versorgung der Bewohner mitverantwortlich. Tägliche Aufgaben sind die Zubereitung des Futters, die Fütterung und die Säuberung der Ställe. Verletzte Tiere brauchen besondere Pflege oder müssen medizinisch behandelt werden. Auch hier kannst du hautnah dabei sein und dem Team unter die Arme greifen. Die Gehege, Zäune und Wege müssen regelmäßig geprüft und instandgehalten werden. Dabei kannst du dein handwerkliches Geschick unter Beweis stellen und dir neue kreative Lösungen ausdenken. Hast du Lust, dein Wissen weiterzugeben? Dann kannst du die Besuchergruppen empfangen und durch das Reservat führen. Oder überzeuge junge Menschen für den Naturschutz und Erhaltung der Artenvielfalt und kläre über die Bedrohung der Tierarten auf.
The working hours are approx. 4 - 5 hours a day, 6 days a week from Monday to Saturday. There are two shifts to which the volunteers and employees are divided: either from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm. You can discuss with us before the project whether you prefer to work in the mornings or afternoons.
You can share your enthusiasm for Peru's exciting animal world with the team and the other volunteers and learn lots of new things.
Das Reservat liegt im sogenannten „heiligen Tal der Inkas“ 22 km nördlich der Stadt Cusco. Im wunderschönen Tal findest du weitläufige Felder und Landschaften wie in Bilderbüchern. Die majestätischen, riesigen Berge hinter dem Tal sind schneebedeckt und laden zum Erklimmen ein. Viele kleine, ländliche Andendörfer liegen im Tal und verzaubern dich mit ihrer peruanischen Kultur. Das Tal war früher von den Inkas bevölkert und heute kannst du dort die spannenden Ruinen erkunden und alles über die Kultur und Lebensweise dieser Völker erfahren. Zahlreiche Ruinen gibt es in Pisac, Chinchero oder Ollantaytambo. Das Andendorf Pisac ist außerdem für seine farbenfrohen Märkte bekannt, auf denen du günstige Souvenirs erstehen kannst. Auch ein Ausflug zu den atemberaubenden Terrassenanlagen von Moray lohnt sich definitiv!
The former capital of the Incas, Cusco, lies at an altitude of over 3,400 meters and is the perfect starting point for exploring the world-famous Machu Picchu or the Rainbow Mountains. But there are also many historical monuments to see within the city. Backpackers from all over the world meet in Cusco and create a great atmosphere. Here you can experience the true culture of the Peruvians, just sit down in the Plaza de Armas on a Sunday and let yourself be captivated by the cheerfulness of the people. You'll find street musicians and vendors on every corner.
You do not need any special qualifications for this project. You should have a passion for animals and the motivation to make a lasting improvement to the lives of wild animals. You should also be keen to learn lots of new things and be committed to protecting wild animals. Reliability, the ability to work in a team and openness towards a new culture and other people from all over the world are very important for participation.
The national language in Peru is Spanish. You should have a basic knowledge of Spanish and English to work on the project. Of course, you will improve your skills very quickly on site.
If you do not yet have any knowledge of Spanish, we recommend that you take a Spanish course beforehand so that you can acquire the necessary skills and are well prepared for the project and living with the locals.
You will share an apartment in Cusco with other volunteers or guests. The house is located in the center of Cusco and offers the perfect starting point for exploring the beautiful city. There are several shared or single rooms in the apartment. You will share a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room with your flatmates. In the kitchen you have the opportunity to cook cheap meals. Or you can try out the many restaurants and cafés in the city.
Depending on availability, you will stay in an apartment or comparable accommodation.
The Wildlife Shelter near Cusco is located in the Sacred Valley about 20 km from the city of Cusco in the direction of Pisac. To get from your accommodation in the center of Cusco to the project site, you can take the public bus. The journey takes around half an hour and the buses run regularly. The bus ticket costs around 5 soles (approx. €1.25) and is not included in the program price.
Carlos is German-Peruvian and grew up in Lima in a German family. He still lives there today and therefore speaks both Spanish and German. He has never been in Germany for more than three months, but he knows the customs and traditions first-hand. He also knows his home country Peru and its culture and can hardly wait to show you everything. Carlos describes himself as a fun-loving, helpful and humorous person who will always be at your side with help and advice. He is our local insider who will give you lots of tips and information about Peru and the rest of Latin America. Carlos will look after you during the introductory event in Lima.
