VOLUNTEERING THAILAND

ELEPHANT CARE

Would you like to spend your day giving elephants back a dignified life without being chained? This is possible at our sanctuary for rescued elephants between lakes and forests in the tropical south of Thailand. Here you have the opportunity to accompany the animals as they bathe, help harvest their food or walk through the forest with the mahouts (elephant keepers). Unfortunately, Asian elephants in Thailand are suffering from the loss of their habitat, exploitation for the purpose of work and tourist activities. Here you can lend a hand, learn and achieve a real improvement for individual animals and even an entire population. You will work in a team with experienced mahouts and volunteers from all over the world and gain practical knowledge about caring for elephants. You will experience how your support has an immediate and tangible impact. Are you ready for a physically demanding but deeply meaningful commitment? Your work not only gives elephants a better quality of life, but also changes our perspective on nature conservation.

Project description

If you are looking for a project that allows you to have a respectful encounter with elephants by learning more about the animals and their challenges, our elephant conservation project on Thailand's coast is the place for you. In a world where elephants are still endangered, the project offers rescued elephants a home in semi-natural forests and grasslands where they can roam freely and socialize with each other.

The elephant sanctuary is surrounded by large forested areas owned by our project to provide a species-appropriate environment for the rescued elephants. The largest enclosure covers an impressive 18 hectares with natural trees, lakes and grazing areas. The elephants live here free of chains. This makes our partner project the first project in Asia where the elephants can live completely free from any kind of restraint, day and night. This is a milestone in the treatment of these impressive animals and a clear signal against abuse.

Thailand is home to both wild and domesticated Asian elephants. The domesticated group mostly consists of animals taken from the wild or born in captivity. Many of them have been trained to work in tourism or the timber industry. A sad fate for these gentle giants. Thailand's wild elephant population, estimated at 3,000 to 3,500 animals, is struggling to survive. They live in grasslands and dense rainforests throughout the country. Historically, domesticated elephants were mainly used in the timber industry, which ironically often contributed to the destruction of their natural habitat.

Since logging was banned in 1989, many of these working elephants have been converted to tourism or have had to beg on the streets of large cities in order to survive. This is extremely stressful for the animals' health and completely unnatural. Elephants that have to work or beg on busy, congested roads are often involved in traffic accidents. This has fatal consequences for them and their mahouts. Unfortunately, there are no laws in Thailand to effectively prevent this abuse. The founders of our partner project are working hard to change this.

The elephant conservation project offers these elephants a second chance and a retreat where they can spend the rest of their lives in dignity and safety. The support of volunteers is indispensable. Without the commitment of the Volutneers, the project would not be able to provide the care and attention that these sensitive animals deserve.

The project's mission is clear: it aims to promote the protection and well-being of elephants, protect them from exploitation and preserve their habitat. At the same time, it aims to increase understanding of the complex problems faced by these animals in Thai society and among tourists through education. Only when people understand why elephants are so special and what dangers threaten them can they act responsibly.

The project was launched in 2001 by a dedicated founder who, with the support of the local population, was given a large piece of land to create the first safe haven for elephants in Thailand. Since then, the project has grown steadily and has developed into one of the most important centers for the protection of Asian elephants in the country. Today, experienced staff and an international team of over 40 volunteers work hand in hand to ensure the welfare of the animals. A particular focus is on the ethical treatment of the elephants. In concrete terms, this means that no animal in the project is ever tied up, either during the day or at night. The aim is to respect the elephants' natural needs and provide them with an environment that is as close to their nature as possible. This approach sets our project apart from many other facilities and makes it a pioneer in the field of elephant conservation.

Our project relies on the active support of volunteers, as caring for the animals and maintaining the large grounds is an enormous task. Volunteers from all over the world, from young to old, come from different backgrounds and are all happy to work together to provide the elephants with a species-appropriate life. Without this dedicated help, the work on site would not be possible.

Anyone who decides to become part of the project actively contributes to combating the abuses in the treatment of elephants. The time and energy that volunteers invest goes directly towards the care and rehabilitation of the elephants. The hope is that volunteers will take this awareness back to their home countries and act as ambassadors for the responsible treatment of elephants and other wildlife.

With your commitment to elephant conservation, you can help to ensure that these majestic animals are better protected in the future. Join us and become part of a global movement for the conservation of Asian elephants. Every contribution counts.

Tasks

As a volunteer at the Elephant Refuge, you will experience first-hand the responsibility of caring for these majestic animals on a daily basis. Your daily routine follows the natural rhythm of the elephants and is characterized by physical work, lots of time in the fresh air and unforgettable encounters with the animals. Together with the experienced mahouts (elephant guides), you will take on important tasks that contribute directly to the animals' welfare.

The day starts early when the elephants are already active. In the morning, you help prepare and distribute the food, which consists of fresh fruit, vegetables and plants. This also includes harvesting fodder plants, for example cutting banana plants or collecting grasses to provide the elephants with sufficient natural food.

Another important part of your work is cleaning the enclosures and water points. This is how you ensure that the animals can live in a clean and safe environment. The large pools in the enclosures need regular maintenance and you help to keep them clean and functional.

Elephant baths are one of the irregular activities. Especially in the hot, dry season, the animals are washed by the mahouts as required. It is then possible to help wash the pachyderms. An activity that not only serves hygiene purposes, but also gives the elephants visible pleasure.

The elephants live in the extensive surrounding forests and grasslands. There they can roam freely, search for natural food and stay in an environment that is very close to their original habitat. From time to time, depending on the elephants and if it is necessary for them, you can accompany the animals on a walk.

The design of the so-called "enrichments" is also part of your daily routine. These enrichment elements encourage the elephants' natural behavior and keep them mentally and physically active. This can include hiding food, installing new branches or ropes in the enclosures or building small structures for the elephants to nibble on.

In addition to working directly with the elephants, you will also be involved in general maintenance and care work on the grounds. This includes everything from repairing fences to planting new trees and grasses. Sometimes you will also provide short-term support in other areas of the center when help is needed.

The tasks are assigned daily by the volunteer coordinator. They make sure that everyone gets to know different activities and is deployed according to their own abilities. There are no fixed positions, instead you work in small teams that are led by experienced long-term volunteers or mahouts. Everyone contributes according to their own pace and strengths and if you feel that a task is too easy or too difficult, you can contact the team of coordinators at any time.

Work is carried out six days a week, usually from 6.30 am to around 5 pm. There are several breaks during the day, including breakfast, lunch and short rest breaks in between. The work can be physically demanding, but you will soon realize how fulfilling it is to contribute directly to the welfare of the elephants.

A small but important side job for all Vounteers is the so-called "Doggie Duty". Two people a day look after the dogs that live in the volunteer house. This includes feeding, washing and walking the dogs.

Without the support of the volunteers, the work at the Elephant Refuge would not be possible. Every helping hand ensures that the rescued elephants can lead a dignified, safe life as close to nature as possible. And at the end of the day, you will know that your efforts are making a tangible difference. Not only for the local animals, but also for the protection of this endangered species.

Program location

The Elephant Care Project is idyllically located in the province of Phetchaburi, surrounded by tropical greenery and yet only a short drive away from Thailand's dream beaches. After a fulfilling week with the elephants, you can reach the sea in just 30 minutes, where fine sandy beaches, gentle waves and the relaxed atmosphere of coastal resorts such as Cha-am await you.

Everyday life takes place in the midst of rural tranquillity, surrounded by rice fields, small villages and friendly locals. Right on the doorstep you will find small stores, markets and cookshops with freshly prepared Thai dishes. If you fancy more variety, you can drive around 45 minutes to Hua Hin, a lively town with long beaches, colorful night markets and a large selection of restaurants and cafés. The trip can be organized at any time via the coordination team.

There is also a lot to discover near the project. A Buddhist temple to explore, a river to swim in or cozy communal areas where you can sit together with volunteers from all over the world in the evening. Social activities such as movie nights, lectures and sporting events take place regularly. Perfect for making new friends.

Medical care is assured: Pharmacies and smaller clinics are within easy reach, larger hospitals are located in Hua Hin, and police stations are also located in the neighboring villages.

On your day off each week, you can decide for yourself whether you want to explore the coast, enjoy the sun on the beach or visit hidden temples in the region. Here you will experience a perfect mix of meaningful commitment to animal welfare and unforgettable moments by the sea.

Getting to the Elephant Care project is straightforward. The most convenient way is to be picked up directly in Bangkok, whether from Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK), Don Muenang Airport (DMK) or your hostel. The journey takes around three hours. Transfers are possible between 06:00 and 14:00 so that the project team can meet you personally on site.
