Project description

Are you passionate about horses and can't imagine anything better than living on a real horse ranch and getting your hands dirty? Or do you have no experience with the animals but have always wanted to learn to ride? Here it doesn't matter whether you are already a professional on horseback or an interested beginner - you can spend a lot of time on the back of these fascinating animals if you want to.

At our horse ranch in a small and idyllic village in the north of Peru, you have the unique opportunity to learn to ride or improve your skills. And not on just any horses, but on the world-famous Peruvian Paso horses. There are quite a few of them on the farm. A Swiss-Peruvian couple runs the farm, where you can expect a pure rural atmosphere surrounded by beautiful and impressive nature.

In addition to horses, the farm also keeps cows, chickens and ducks. The farm operators also help horses in need as well as street dogs and cats. They shelter the abandoned animals, sterilize them, heal them and find them new homes.

There are exciting sights of the Inca culture in the area surrounding the farm, which can be explored on horseback. Every now and then, tourists visit the farm and book excursions with the horses. You can accompany them on a tour, for example to pyramids from the Inca period.

There are various areas of responsibility on the farm, and (almost) everything revolves around horses. You will take care of the Peruvian Paso horses and help train the elegant animals. Of course, you will also spend a lot of time on the horses' backs. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, everyone can get involved here according to their own abilities and develop them quickly. A unique opportunity to combine work with passion. Time will fly by.

There are also other activities on the farm where you can lend a hand. The farm operators also help horses in need as well as street dogs and cats. They shelter the abandoned animals, sterilize them, heal them and find them new homes. You can support them and look after the dogs and cats as well as the other animals on the farm. If you like, you can also help with the work in the fields and the maintenance of the farm.

From time to time, tourists book a tour with the horses, for example to the archaeological sites of the Incas. You can accompany them on the riding tours. You will become a Peru expert yourself and get to know the country from a very special perspective.

Program location

An idyllic rural atmosphere surrounded by nature, beautiful landscapes and impressive archaeological sites from the pre-Inca and Inca periods await you in the area around the farm. The village center of Pacora is just a five-minute walk away. It is located on the north coast of Peru in the province of Lambayeque, just an hour's bus ride from Chiclayo. You can visit the city of Chiclayo in your free time and explore the beaches in the surrounding area. The bus connection to Chiclayo is very good during the day. The village of Pacora itself also has pharmacies, butchers, bakers and various stores where you can buy almost anything. Things are very informal in this idyllic little village. Everyone knows everyone here. There is a lovely swimming pool 5 minutes by bus from the farm. Around 7 hours to the north, you will reach what are probably the most beautiful beaches in Peru in Máncora, which are perfect for a longer excursion, where you can watch whales and swim with turtles. You can also reach the Andean city of Cajamarca in 7 hours by bus, where the last Inca king was captured by the Spanish. You can see many sights, go trekking in the Andes and bathe in the thermal baths of the Incas. A little further away, accessible by night bus, you can visit Chachapoyas, where there is an Inca temple (Kuelap) as well as the highest waterfall in the world, the Gocta waterfall. Or you can travel to Tarapoto in the jungle, also by night bus. There you can go on jungle tours and visit a lagoon.

You don't need any special qualifications for the job on the farm. If you have a big heart for horses and other animals, a positive attitude and enthusiasm, then you will love volunteering at the horse ranch. Even if you've never sat on a horse before, that's no problem. The animals are very good-natured and if you are keen, you can learn to ride very quickly. If you already have experience with horses, you can take on more responsible tasks, such as training the Paso horses.

Of course you shouldn't be afraid of getting your hands dirty, you live on the farm and are therefore involved in the daily work.

The national language in Peru is Spanish. The farm is run by a Swiss-Peruvian couple. This gives you the advantage of having a German-speaking contact person directly on the farm. However, as you will be working with locals who do not speak German, you should have a basic knowledge of the language in order to be able to communicate with them. If you do not yet have any knowledge, we recommend a language course at the beginning of the trip, which we will be happy to organize for you.

Accommodation and meals

You live directly on the farm in a room or bungalow next to the family home. You will either stay in a single room or in a double room with another participant.

From Monday to Saturday, we eat together in the kitchen three times a day. In the morning, the participants prepare their own breakfast. In the evening the owner of the farm cooks, at lunchtime a cook prepares the food. Meals are not included on Sundays, but you are of course free to use the fully equipped kitchen.

A washing machine is available on site for a fee of €1 per wash.

He also knows his home country Peru and its culture and can hardly wait to show you everything. Carlos describes himself as a fun-loving, helpful and humorous person who will always be at your side with help and advice. He is our local insider who will give you lots of tips and information about Peru and the rest of Latin America. Carlos will look after you during the introductory event in Lima. If you have any questions during your stay in Latin America, a German-speaking contact person will be available to you via WhatsApp in the same time zone.
