VOLUNTEER WORK PERU

CHILD CARE

Do you care about children and want to actively support them on their way to a better future? Your commitment is needed! In Huaraz, many families live in simple and poor conditions, who can neither find the time nor the financial means to adequately care for, provide for and support their children. Our organization welcomes these children with open arms, helps them with their homework, offers them numerous leisure activities and feeds them with delicious food. You will assist in all areas and become the children’s confidant. At the same time, you will playfully improve your Spanish skills and learn first-hand about life and culture in a Peruvian city.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Our partner organization in beautiful Huaraz inspires us again and again. It was founded by a Peruvian NGO and cares for children in need.

Unfortunately, many families in Peru live in poverty and have neither the time nor the financial means to give their children a carefree life. This is where the aid project comes into play, for which you can also get involved.

The goal of the organization is to break the vicious circle of poverty and to offer the children a supportive environment that accompanies them until they finish school. The project is located in a house in the center of Huaraz and receives many children and young people every day. It is meant to be a place of refuge, a place of trust and respect where young people feel safe, secure and heard.

Here, children can drop in before and after school to learn, play and eat. They are helped with their homework and offered tutoring. This makes it easier for them to secure their way to graduation from school – the chance for a self-determined life. Furthermore, in addition to typical schooling, the children are taught about topics such as healthy eating, personal hygiene and respectful behavior. A place to learn, play and grow up.

Some of the former children of the organization even come back later to help themselves and support the next generation. They are now studying at the university in Huaraz and come back to the project 1 to 2 times a week to teach. A unique project.

TASKS

You will help the children with their homework and create a pleasant free time with them after the tasks have been completed. You will play soccer with them, teach them new activities or read to them (in Spanish). There are two groups: The older students come in the morning from 09:00 to 12:00 before school and the younger children in the afternoon between 15:00 and 18:00. Since there are not enough school buildings in Peru for all the children, they are divided up. Before the children go home, they get a healthy meal every day. At the end of the day, everyone pitches in together to leave the home clean.

You will quickly feel at home in this project, because you will become a person of respect and trust for the children and young people – a wonderful task. You should get involved and take your new role seriously. The students of the organization will thank you day by day and you will learn a lot about yourself. You will also experience and get to know the country of Peru and its culture first hand.

As a volunteer in this project you will help the children with their homework, explain their tasks and study with them for school. After the work is done, there is free time. This is where your commitment is needed! Get creative and come up with cool activities for the kids. Put art projects into action, organize soccer tournaments or teach them your own favorite sport.

If you are particularly talented and enjoy social media, you can also help the coordinator with his activities and, for example, take over the Instagram presence or help with photo and video projects.

Huaraz

The city of Huaraz is located high above sea level at over 3,000 meters and is surrounded by the majestic Andes. The snow-capped peaks are always present and make the city of 50,000 inhabitants a highlight of Peru.

Huaraz is the perfect place for all mountain and trekking lovers. Here you can get in tune with nature and go on one-day or multi-day hikes through the impressive mountain landscapes. As a reward for the climb, you will usually come out at a turquoise, incredibly beautiful lagoon surrounded by 7,000 meter high mountains. After the effort, you can relax your muscles in one of the thermal baths.

The city is bustling with outdoor-loving travelers from all over the world, so there’s always something going on. Tours are planned and adventures are reported in the bars.

The house of the organization is located about 5 minutes walk from the main square of Huaraz and you can reach everything on foot.

REQUIREMENTS

You don’t need any special qualifications to work in the project. Of course, you should enjoy working with children, like to deal with them and want to make new contacts and friends. You will work a lot with local people. You should be open-hearted and motivated to get to know a new culture and everything that goes with it. The work in this project will improve your Spanish skills in a fun way and will also have a positive impact on your life. A wonderful experience that you will remember for a long time.

LANGUAGE

The national language in Peru is Spanish. You will be around a lot of kids who don’t know English. A basic knowledge of Spanish is definitely an advantage. If you do not have any knowledge of Spanish at the moment, we recommend that you take a language course, which we will gladly organize for you. You can take the language course before or during your time in the project.

ACCOMODATION

You will live together with other volunteers from different countries in the volunteer room in the house of the organization. The room has several bunk beds, a lounge area and a bathroom. It is also possible to stay in a single or double room for an extra charge.
