VOLUNTEER WORK PERU

CHILD CARE

Do you have a heart for children and would you like to actively support them on their way to a better future? Your commitment is required! In Huaraz, many families live in simple and poor conditions, who have neither the time nor the financial means to look after, provide for and support their children adequately. Our organization welcomes these children with open arms, helps with their homework, offers them leisure opportunities and a space to develop. You support in all areas and become the confidant of the children. At the same time, you will playfully improve your Spanish skills and get to know and love life and culture in a Peruvian city first-hand.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Our partner organization in beautiful Huaraz inspires us again and again. It was launched by a Peruvian NGO and takes care of children in need.

Unfortunately, many families in Peru live in poverty and have neither the time nor the financial resources to enable their children to lead a carefree life. This is where the aid project comes into play, which you can also get involved in.

The goal of the organization is to break the vicious circle of poverty and to offer the children a supportive environment that will accompany them until they graduate from school. The project is based in a house in the center of Huaraz and welcomes many children and young people every day. It should be a place of refuge, a place of trust and respect where young people feel safe, secure and heard.

Children can come here before and after school to study and play. They are helped with their homework and tutoring is offered. This makes it easier for them to safely graduate from school – giving them the chance to lead a self-determined life. In addition to the typical school education, the children are introduced to topics such as healthy eating, personal hygiene and respectful behavior. A place of learning, playing and growing up.

Some of the organization’s former children even come back later to help themselves and support the next generation. They are now studying at the university in Huaraz and come back to the project to teach 1 to 2 times a week. A unique project.

TASKS

You help the children with their homework and create a pleasant free time with them after the tasks are completed. You play with them, teach them new activities or read to them (in Spanish). There are two groups: The older students come in the morning from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in front of the school and the younger children come in the afternoon between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Since there are not enough school buildings for all children in Peru, they are divided up. At the end of the day, everyone pitches in together to leave the home clean.

In this project you will quickly feel like you are at home, because you will become a person of respect and trust for the children and young people – a wonderful task. You should embrace it and take your new role seriously. The students of the organization will thank you every day and you will learn a lot about yourself. You will also experience and get to know the country of Peru and its culture up close.

As a volunteer in this project, you will help the children with their homework, explain their tasks to them and study with them for school. After work comes leisure time. Your commitment is required here! Get creative and come up with cool activities for the kids. Make art projects a reality, host soccer tournaments (depending on the weather) or teach them your own favorite sport.

If you are particularly talented and enjoy social media, you can also help the coordinator with his activities and, for example, take over the Instagram presence or help with photo and video projects.

Huaraz

The city of Huaraz sits high above sea level at over 3,000 meters and is surrounded by the majestic Andes. The snow-capped peaks are always present and make the city of 50,000 inhabitants a highlight of Peru.

Due to the high mountain location, the climate in Huaraz is cool all year round and is between 9 and 12 degrees. There is also a rainy and dry season. The rainy season lasts from November to April, meaning afternoon showers are heavier during this time. The dry season with sunny weather is from June to October.

Huaraz is the perfect place for all mountain and trekking lovers. Here you can get in harmony with nature and go on one-day or multi-day hikes through the impressive mountain landscapes. As a reward for the ascent, you usually come out at a turquoise, incredibly beautiful lagoon surrounded by 7,000 meter high mountains. After the effort you can relax your muscles in one of the thermal baths.

Outdoor lovers from all over the world cavort in the city, so there is always something going on. Tours are planned and adventures reported in the bars.

The House of Organization is about 5 minutes walk from the main square of Huaraz and you can walk to everything.

REQUIREMENTS

You don’t need any special qualifications to work in the project. Of course, you should enjoy working with children, like to deal with them and want to make new contacts and friends. You will work a lot with local people. You should be open-hearted and motivated to get to know a new culture and everything that goes with it. The work in this project will improve your Spanish skills in a fun way and will also have a positive impact on your life. A wonderful experience that you will remember for a long time.

LANGUAGE

The national language in Peru is Spanish. You will be around a lot of kids who don’t know English. A basic knowledge of Spanish is definitely an advantage. If you do not have any knowledge of Spanish at the moment, we recommend that you take a language course, which we will gladly organize for you. You can take the language course before or during your time in the project.

ACCOMODATION

You will live together with other volunteers from different countries in the volunteer room in the house of the organization. The room has several bunk beds, a lounge area and a bathroom. It is also possible to stay in a single or double room for an extra charge.
