Quick Facts

Our volunteer projects in Chile

Children's aid projects

Being able to live out and „be a child“ in everyday life is a privilege that not many children get to enjoy. This is precisely where our social projects in Chile come in. The focus is not only on the academic education of children and young people, but also on giving them a safe space in which their creative, sporting and social skills can be developed. This can create the basis for a self-determined life and the opportunity to make this privilege possible for the next generation.

leading children and young people into the future

Despite economic stability, many families in Chile live under difficult social conditions. Particularly in rural regions and in the outskirts of large cities such as Santiago or Valparaíso, children from disadvantaged families often have limited access to education, medical care or childcare. Many of them grow up in insecure circumstances, are affected by violence, neglect or poverty and need special support.

As a volunteer, you can help to provide a safe space for children to play, learn and grow. You will support childcare in daycare centers, after-school programs or schools. You will help to make education more accessible and create structure and perspective through creative activities, sports or homework supervision. English lessons in particular play a major role in opening up the opportunity to gain a foothold in the international arena and job opportunities.

Animal and nature conservation projects

Chile is one of the most diverse countries in South America and impresses with its unique nature. From rugged coastlines to dense forests and remote islands, the country provides habitats for numerous animal species. At the same time, many of these ecosystems and animals are under pressure. Habitat loss, Environmental changes and human influences mean that both wild and domestic animals are increasingly dependent on protection and support.

This is exactly where our animal welfare projects in Chile come in. They connect concrete help on site with a sustainable approach, that makes a long-term difference. As a participant, you not only become an observer, but also support projects that work every day to give animals a better future.

Get to know animal welfare projects in Chile

In the Wildlife project On the island of Chiloé, you are involved in the protection of native wild animals. Injured animals are taken in, cared for and prepared for their return to the wild. At the same time, environmental education plays an important role in creating long-term awareness for the protection of unique ecosystems. The work takes place in a remote, natural environment and gives you an intensive insight into practical nature conservation.

In the Animal Care Project near Santiago, you work with dogs that have been rescued from difficult situations. Many of them have been living on the streets or have been abandoned. The aim of the project is to stabilize the animals, build trust and find them a new home in the long term. You will experience first-hand how important continuous care and patience are in animal welfare.

Both projects show different sides of animal welfare in Chile and give you the opportunity to get actively involved. At the same time, you will gain valuable experience abroad, get to know new perspectives and become part of an international community.

Volunteering in Chile means taking on responsibility and getting to know the country in a special way at the same time. You immerse yourself in everyday life on site, work closely with local teams and experience moments that go far beyond a classic trip.

Volunteering in Chile

with wanderworld travel

From our own experience, we can assure you that Chile will welcome you in an incredibly warm, open and helpful way. Hospitality is very important here and real friendships often develop from an encounter that will last long after your stay. And there is a lot to discover, because Chile's rich culture in particular makes a stay abroad in this country something extraordinary. Chile is very proud of its own history and its cultural identity is deeply influenced by indigenous traditions as well as Spanish colonization. On a volunteer project, you will work closely with the local population, giving you the chance to experience Chilean culture in a particularly intense and authentic way.

Chile is also a real land of adventure in terms of landscape: whether you're hiking through the vastness of Patagonia, exploring the volcanoes and lakes in the south, strolling through the colorful alleyways of Valparaíso or marveling at the bizarre beauty of the Atacama Desert. Chile offers you a diversity that you will hardly find in any other country!

Get ready for an unforgettable experience between natural wonders, cultural exchange and personal growth. Your adventure in Chile is waiting for you!

A country full of contrasts and natural wonders

Chile is one of the most scenic countries in the world and is therefore perfect for anyone who wants to do volunteer work and experience unparalleled nature at the same time.

With a length of over 4,300 km, Chile encompasses an impressive variety of landscapes and ecosystems along the Pacific Ocean and the Andes. In the north is the Atacama Desert, known as the driest region on earth with surreal salt flats, geysers and clear starry skies. Further south, fertile valleys, wine regions and lively cities such as the capital Santiago, a modern metropolis with colonial flair, characterize the terrain. In the far south, ice-covered glaciers, majestic mountains, deep blue lakes and vast fjords await you in Patagonia, for example in the world-famous Torres del Paine National Park.

This outstanding geographical diversity makes Chile a paradise for nature and outdoor enthusiasts and enriches any volunteer work with spectacular impressions and unique experiences.

Culture and history

The culture and history of Chile is characterized by a complex interplay of indigenous cultures, colonial heritage and profound political upheavals of the recent past. Indigenous communities such as the Mapuche in the south and the Aymara in the north lived here long before the arrival of the Spanish, and their traditions, languages and world views still shape the country's cultural identity today. The Mapuche culture in particular is highly visible in arts and crafts, music and social debates.

Chile's cultural heritage is also internationally significant: several sites are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the mysterious, remote island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island), whose monumental stone figures („moai“) are Chile's most important archaeological heritage and are deeply rooted in the history of the Polynesian Rapa Nui people. Other examples are the wooden churches of Chiloé, which combine Spanish missionary architecture with local building traditions, and the former saltpetre plants of Humberstone and Santa Laura, which are reminders of Chile's industrial history in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Coming to terms with the military dictatorship at the end of the 20th century under Augusto Pinochet, which was characterized by serious human rights violations and political repression, still plays an important role in the collective memory and is addressed in many memorials, museums and educational projects.

For volunteers, Chile not only offers the opportunity to be involved in social or ecological projects, but also to immerse themselves in the country's cultural roots and historical developments and to get to know the tension between history and modernity in a country that is actively coming to terms with its past. The direct exchange with local communities in everyday life enables a deeper understanding of historical experiences, social challenges and the strong desire for social cohesion and shaping the future.

Enjoy yourself in chile

Chilean cuisine is as diverse as the landscape and Chilean culture and invites you to explore it from north to south.

On the coast, fish and seafood dominate the menus, with freshly prepared seafood such as mussels, sea urchins, oysters and crabs, which are often served in stews or with onions and coriander, being particularly popular. A typical dish that you should definitely try is „mariscal“: a cold seafood cocktail seasoned with lemon juice, coriander and chili, which is a sensational treat on hot days.

In the interior of the country and in the Andean regions, the cuisine is more down-to-earth and warming. „Cazuela“, a hearty stew with chicken or beef, pumpkin, potatoes, corn and rice, is one of the most popular home-cooked dishes. Pastel de choclo„, a casserole made from corn dough with minced meat, olives, eggs and raisins, is also a real classic and is particularly popular in late summer when the corn is freshly harvested.

In the southern region of Chiloé, „curanto“ is served, a traditional dish that is cooked in an earth oven made of hot stones and consists of a hearty mixture of mussels, meat, potatoes and cornbread. The best thing to do is to try all the different flavors!

The choice of drinks is also varied. Chile is one of the most important wine-producing countries in South America, with growing regions such as the Maipo, Colchagua and Casablanca valleys, which produce internationally renowned wines. The Chilean Carmenère in particular, an almost extinct grape variety from France, has developed into a national specialty here. In the bars, it is impossible to imagine life without the pisco sour, a cocktail made from Chilean grape brandy, lemon juice, sugar and ice, which is both fruity and refreshing. However, this should not be confused with Peruvian pisco - even if the names are the same, the preparation methods are different and both nations are extremely proud of their version!

Patagonia and the Chilean lake region - natural paradises in the south of Chile

Chile is rich in spectacular natural wonders that captivate travelers and volunteers from all over the world. One of our absolute favorites in the south, the unique „Torres del Paine“ National Park, impresses with its striking granite peaks, icy blue glaciers and amazing wildlife. The sight of a few photos is enough to make you want to put on your hiking boots! Trekking, landscape photography and nature observation are undisputed highlights here. One of the most impressive ice fields is the Grey Glacier, which regularly „calves“. Huge blocks of ice break off and fall into the adjacent glacial lakes, creating a fascinating natural spectacle that can be experienced on hikes lasting several days in almost untouched wilderness.

Even further south are national monuments such as Los Pingüinos, home to large Magellanic penguin colonies on islands in the Magellan Strait, and of course the countless fjords, lakes and glaciers in Patagonia.

In the north, the surreal sand and rock landscapes of the Atacama Desert dominate, which are not only unique in terms of landscape, but are also an outstanding region for stargazing due to the extremely clear night sky. Don't miss out on viewing the star formations through a telescope in the dark expanses of the desert!

Chile is truly one of the most diverse natural wonder destinations in the world. Combine your volunteer work with exploring this remarkable country and gain experiences that you will never forget!

YOUR ACCOMMODATION

In many projects, accommodation is provided directly by the local partner organization. In these cases, you will usually live in a simple but cozy volunteer house together with other volunteers from all over the world. You can expect communal lounges, a well-equipped kitchen and outdoor areas where you can relax or socialize. In this open and warm atmosphere, close friendships are often formed that last far beyond the duration of the project.

If accommodation directly on the project site is not possible, you will be accommodated in a shared room in the guesthouse. This is furnished in a typical local style and often also consists of a communal area, kitchen and shared bathroom. Here too, you have the chance to get to know other volunteers and travelers from all over the world!

If you would prefer a single room or are looking for a little more privacy, you are welcome to ask us about available options.

Meals are sometimes included in the price of the projects. However, you always have access to a kitchen where you can cook for yourself and try out regional ingredients. You can find fresh fruit, vegetables and spices at the local markets, which you can use to discover Chilean cuisine in your own way. Alternatively, you can indulge in culinary delights in the surrounding cafés and restaurants: from freshly baked empanadas and traditional dishes such as cazuela or pastel de choclo to sweet specialties such as alfajores.

Why volunteering in Chile is worthwhile

Whether you are interested in educational projects, environmental protection or animal welfare, volunteering in Chile gives you the chance to make a real difference. Chile is a country full of natural beauty, but also with social challenges and a great need for dedicated support. Especially in rural regions, there is a lack of resources in education, healthcare and animal welfare. By getting involved, you can play an active role, raise awareness and initiate sustainable change. At the same time, you will get to know the country in a deeper and more authentic way, make new friends and develop personally. Volunteering in Chile is not only about helping, but also about growing.

At WanderWorld Travel, we support you in finding the right volunteer project for your interests and are at your side throughout the entire trip. From planning and travel to on-site support. As a small, personal travel agency, we attach great importance to direct contact with our participants. We know the projects in Chile personally and work closely with them. We pass on our experience and passion for travel and Latin America to you with full conviction - for a volunteer adventure that you will never forget.
