Our volunteer projects in Guatemala

Animal and nature conservation projects

In Guatemala, environmental protection and sustainability have played a minor role so far. Existing resources are exploited, and large parts of nature are used for agriculture. This has led to a decreasing habitat for many animals and contributes to species extinction. Through your volunteer work in Guatemala, you can contribute to protecting endangered species and raising awareness among the local population about the importance of environmental conservation.

Animal welfare in Guatemala

The wildlife rescue center in Petén ensures the protection of endangered species in Guatemala. This sanctuary provides refuge for injured animals. Additionally, the rescue center serves as a place for interaction, where locals and tourists can learn more about Guatemala's wildlife through guided tours. The local project coordinators are eager to welcome animal-loving volunteers like you to actively support the center's work.

In the Turtle Protection Project in El Hawaii, a small coastal town on the Pacific Ocean, you will assist in the breeding and release of the endangered leatherback turtle and other turtle species. The organization also hosts a small wildlife rescue center and a special mangrove conservation project where you can lend a hand.

Children's aid projects

Guatemala, like many other Latin American nations, is heavily affected by unemployment and poverty. Many families live at the subsistence level, which often deprives their children of access to education. Moreover, in large families, children often work to contribute to the family's income. Due to a lack of government support, aid projects in Guatemala serve as a crucial pillar of the social system.

Social projects in Guatemala

In Antigua, you have the opportunity to support the Teaching Project at a private school. Here, children are not only taught academic subjects but also receive a nutritious meal daily, school supplies, and supervision. Local volunteers make a valuable contribution to the education and upbringing of these children, aiming to provide them with a better start in life.

After-school care and homework help is also extremely important and cannot be provided by many families. That is why the children of the San Antonio community are invited to use the Youth Development project 10 km east of Antigua, which provides them with a loving space to develop and play. As a volunteer, you will be involved in the children's leisure activities and offer tutoring in various subjects.

Volunteering in Guatemala

What makes Guatemala special

No matter which project you decide on, with your Volunteering in Guatemala you make a valuable contribution and provide support where help is really needed. You can get involved in the Children and youth work or projects in the Animal and nature conservation and discover a fascinating country at the same time.

Guatemala is still considered by many to be Insider tip and is often underestimated, although it has an incredible amount to offer. You can expect a rich culture, impressive landscapes and ideal conditions for traveling the country as a backpacker.

The following highlights will show you why volunteering in Guatemala is particularly worthwhile. Let yourself be inspired and find out what makes this country so unique.

Imposing volcanic landscape

Guatemala inspires all travelers with breathtaking landscapes, beautiful nature and active volcanoes that make adventurers' hearts beat faster. Where else do you have the opportunity to climb a volcano? From our personal experience, we can assure you that a hike up the Acatenango volcano will be the highlight of your trip to Guatemala. It's an experience you'll never forget and you can reminisce while looking at the cool pictures. From Antigua, you can sign up for a group hike to the volcano and will be provided with hiking equipment by the local tour provider. During your volunteer project in Antigua, you can experience the 2-day hike on a weekend. First, you will hike uphill to the base camp, where you will spend the night in a tent. Before sunset, you hike the last few meters up to the top of Acatenango, where you can marvel at the indescribable sunrise at an altitude of almost 4,000 m. You also get a perfect view of the lava-spewing Fuego volcano. But it's not just a volcano hike that makes your stay in Guatemala special, the sight of the imposing volcanic landscape alone is worth a trip to this country.

Tradition and culture
In Guatemala, you can get to know the interesting Mayan culture and many traditions are still practiced by the locals today. Their way of life reflects the rich cultural history of this indigenous group in various facets of daily life. Many women wear traditional clothing that not only symbolizes their identity, but also represents an impressive craft. Mayan art is not only evident in the colorful woven textiles, but also in the street art adorned with traditional motifs and symbols. These works of art tell stories of a time long past and lend the streets a touch of living history. Craftsmanship in particular, such as intricately hand-woven textiles, painted wooden masks, figurines and much more, play an important role in the culture and can be admired and purchased daily at the large markets. While many countries have gradually lost their traditions and culture, these are still very much alive in Guatemala and will transport you to another world.
Insider tip among backpackers

Guatemala is our insider tip for Latin America, as it is not yet as touristy and well-known for backpacking as Costa Rica or Peru, for example. Nevertheless, the country offers a good infrastructure for travelers, exciting volunteer projects and numerous must-sees. It is not overrun with tourists, but you will find nice hostels, good restaurants and cute cafés everywhere at reasonable prices. Compared to other countries in Latin America, which are more dominated by tourism, you can still find reasonable prices for food, transportation and activities in Guatemala. Affordable shuttles (minivans) will get you from A to B comfortably and safely. As the country is not particularly large, you can visit a wide range of sights in a short space of time. From beautiful cities to beaches, volcanic landscapes, rivers and dense jungle, Guatemala has it all. The country is also perfect for learning Spanish. The Guatemalans have a very clear Spanish and little accent, which makes it easier to understand.

Our favorite city Antigua

Our favorite city is a beautiful colonial city that is also perfect for longer stays. With its charming cobblestone streets, colorful buildings and historic ruins, it transports travelers to a bygone era. The city offers a wealth of leisure opportunities, from exploring its rich history, browsing the large markets, to outdoor activities such as hiking and volcano climbing. Every street corner hides a new café or restaurant, with beautiful rooftop terraces offering views of the volcanoes. The city is known for its culinary diversity and comes alive every night in restaurants and bars that offer not only delicious local cuisine but also a lively nightlife, making every day a new adventure. In Antigua, you can experience a colorful mix of locals and backpackers from all over the world. A place where you will never get bored. The city is also the perfect starting point for excursions throughout the country and is only 1.5 hours away from the capital's airport.

Your accommodation

If you decide to work on a project in Antigua - Teaching, Youth Development or Eco Farm- you have the option of staying in a cool guesthouse or with a host family.

The host family will provide you with delicious Guatemalan meals for breakfast and dinner. The insight into the local family gives you the opportunity to get to know the way of life and improve your Spanish. Nevertheless, you will have your own retreat in a private single room.

In the guesthouse, you'll share your new home with people from all over the world. Accommodation typically involves staying in a dormitory-style room with other volunteers or guests, where you can forge new connections in the communal kitchen or on the rooftop terrace. The guesthouse is lovingly decorated and located on the quiet outskirts of Antigua. For an additional fee, you can opt for a single room. Meals are not included at the guesthouse, but volunteers often enjoy cooking together in the communal kitchen.

Our driver will be happy to pick you up at the airport in Guatemala City and drive you directly to your accommodation. The projects in and around Antigua can be reached by public transport.

In our animal and nature conservation programs Turtle Protection and Wildlife In Guatemala, you will be fully immersed in nature and live in a volunteer house surrounded by greenery. The programs have their own accommodation with shared rooms for volunteers on the project site. Here you will be together with like-minded people and spend both work and leisure time with the residents of the project. You will also receive full meals every day. We can organize a shuttle from Antigua to the project locations to make your journey as easy as possible. We offer this in optional travel packages.

Why volunteer in Guatemala with WanderWorld?

Guatemala is a developing country where significant social inequality persists, and there is a lack of adequate measures to combat climate change and species extinction. Over the years, many small NGOs and initiatives have been established to address these issues independently of state assistance. These projects rely on donations and volunteer assistance to sustain their efforts and represent the only chance to continue their initiatives. They play a crucial role in tackling these challenges and making a positive impact in Guatemala.

Nature and animal conservation projects need your active support to ensure the survival of species and protect wildlife. The children and young people in the various social programs can take part in leisure activities or receive academic support that they would otherwise not have access to thanks to the commitment of volunteers. As a volunteer, you actively contribute to social equality and a better society.

We have personally checked the projects in Guatemala and ensure that your help goes where it is needed. We will help you to find the right volunteer project where you can contribute your skills and not only add value to the project, but also develop yourself personally. Some of our WanderWorld Travel employees live in Guatemala and know the country inside out. We have traveled extensively in this wonderful country and have developed many years of experience, which we pass on to our participants. You can contact us before and during the trip with any questions you may have and we will be on hand with help and advice to ensure you have an ideal experience abroad.

Requirements and language

For volunteer work in Guatemala

Prerequisites

For your volunteer work in Guatemala with WanderWorld Travel, you need above all openness, motivation and the willingness to get involved in a new culture. No special prior knowledge is required for most of the projects; what counts is your commitment and enthusiasm for the work in question.

Whether in the social sector with children and young people or in nature and animal protection, you should enjoy getting actively involved and taking on responsibility. For projects such as the Teaching project, a police clearance certificate is also required as you will be working closely with children. In all programs, it is important that you approach people openly and are interested in learning about new perspectives.

Language

You will also grow linguistically during your time in Guatemala. The national language is Spanish, and depending on the project, different prior knowledge is helpful. For example, while you are in the Youth Development Project If you already have a solid basic knowledge of Spanish to be able to communicate well with the children and the team, you can also start other projects without Spanish.

In any case, basic knowledge will make it much easier for you to get started and interact with locals. Many projects therefore recommend a language course at the beginning. At the same time, you will automatically and playfully improve your language skills on site.

Your time in Guatemala will not only be a meaningful commitment, but also a personal journey on which you will develop yourself, learn new skills and gain unforgettable experiences.
