VOLUNTEERING IN MEXICO

In many cases, a visa is not required for unpaid volunteer work in Mexico for stays of up to 180 days. You can then enter the country as a tourist. If you stay longer than 180 days, you will usually need a corresponding visa or residence permit. We will provide you with more detailed information on this.  

The standard vaccinations should be up to date for trips to Mexico. Additional vaccinations such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid or rabies may also be recommended, depending on the duration of the trip, region and type of project. We therefore advise you to seek individual advice from a travel medicine advice center or family doctor before departure.

The difference lies above all in the destination and focus of your stay.

When volunteering, you get involved in social or ecological projects and provide targeted support for local initiatives. The focus is on making a positive contribution and at the same time immersing yourself in the culture of the country.

The Work and Travel program, on the other hand, focuses on a combination of travel and practical experience. In Mexico you will work in a Hostel, You usually receive accommodation and meals in return. Unlike volunteering, the focus here is less on social engagement and more on the experience, exchange and everyday life on site.

Both programs offer you the opportunity to get to know a country in depth. Depending on whether you want to get more involved or gain more practical experience, one or the other will suit you better. In our other project countries, there is also the opportunity to work in a Surf campone Diving school or on a Farm to participate. Of course, you can also combine work & travel and volunteer programs, as well as different countries.

Mexico attracts many volunteers with its cultural diversity, stunning landscapes, and the warm hospitality of its people. At the same time, it’s perfectly normal to have concerns about safety before traveling. This is especially true if you’re going abroad for an extended period and your destination has frequently made headlines.

As in many countries, there are regions in Mexico where special caution is advised. There are several sources that provide regular updates on the security situation, such as the Foreign Officethat U.S. Department of State and the British government (FCDO). It’s important to note that Mexico is a very diverse country, and conditions can vary significantly from region to region. We carefully select our project locations and have a strong local network that keeps us informed about the current situation. Many of the places where our projects take place, such as Playa del Carmen or Puerto Escondido, are popular and well-developed tourist destinations that are visited by many international travelers every year. Should the situation at one of our project locations change, we will of course react immediately and adapt to the changes.

In general, the key to staying safe in everyday life is to be alert and responsible, just as you would on any other trip around the world. This includes, for example, avoiding traveling alone at night, using official transportation, and keeping your valuables secure (and hidden on your person).

To ensure you always feel at ease while traveling, we at WanderWorld Travel won’t leave you to figure out all these questions on your own. We personally guide you from the preparation phase through to your return trip and are always there to support you. Even before your departure, you’ll receive all the important information about your project and your stay, and during our preparatory seminar, we’ll also address the topic of safety explicitly so that you can feel well-prepared and secure. After your arrival, you’ll also have a dedicated contact person on-site at all times. Throughout your entire stay, we’ll stay in regular contact with you and closely monitor current developments to provide you with the best possible support.

With proper preparation and mindful behavior—which we’ll help you refine a bit—nothing will stand in the way of your volunteer work in Mexico.

The cost of volunteering in Mexico depends on the project and the duration of the stay. Usually, services such as accommodation, on-site support, organization and sometimes meals are already included in the price. In addition, costs for flights, insurance and personal expenses should be included.

With us, payment of the program costs takes place in several steps. After your booking, you will first receive all the important documents and information you need to prepare for your trip, such as the confirmation of participation and the invoice. 

A deposit of 10% is usually due immediately after booking to secure your place on the project. The remaining amount is paid four weeks before your departure.

All exact payment modalities and deadlines will be communicated to you transparently during the booking process and in your documents.

Of course, you can also do volunteer work in Mexico on your own. In fact, many of our participants choose to do just that. On site, you will quickly be integrated into everyday life and will never be on your own.

You will often live together with other volunteers, for example in a Guesthouse or in Multi-bed rooms directly with the project. This automatically creates a sense of community and you quickly get to know new people. Working together on the project and doing leisure activities together also makes it easy to make contacts and settle in.

In addition, you always have a fixed Contact person on site. At the same time, you will become part of an international community of other volunteers who have similar experiences to yours.

That's why volunteering in Mexico is particularly suitable for anyone who wants to travel alone but is still looking to make friends quickly.

Yes, with us you can organize your time in Mexico flexibly and ideally combine your project with individual trips. For example, you have the option of extending your stay or combining different programs.

Many of our participants take advantage of this flexibility to travel further through Mexico after their project and get to know the country better. Mexico offers the perfect conditions for this. From beautiful beaches on the Caribbean coast and colonial cities such as Oaxaca or San Cristóbal de las Casas to impressive natural and cultural highlights such as the cenotes or Mayan ruins, everything is on offer.

This means that you can easily add an extra month of travel to your project, which is a great opportunity for many people to enjoy the Mexican adventure to the full.

Yes, with us you have the opportunity to combine different projects flexibly and to organize your stay individually. This means you are not tied to just one project, but can combine different experiences.

For example, you can complete several projects in a row (e.g. Social project + Animal welfare project + Hostel Experience). It is also possible to combine different countries without any problems. You can also extend your stay or add further programs at any time.

Many participants also take the opportunity to plan free travel time between projects or afterwards to discover the country further on their own.

Our projects are deliberately designed for a minimum stay of four weeks for several important reasons.

At the beginning of your assignment, there will be an induction phase. During this time, you will get to know the project processes, the team and your tasks on site. At the same time, the projects invest a lot of time and commitment, especially at the beginning, to familiarize you well and give you a successful start.

To ensure that your involvement offers real added value for the project in the long term, it is important that you can actively participate after this initial period. Only once you have settled in can you make a meaningful contribution and really become part of the project.

Duration also plays a major role in your personal experience. Many of our participants tell us that the most formative moments and the greatest personal development often only occur after the first few weeks. Namely, when you have arrived, built up trust and really feel comfortable in your new environment.

There is also an organizational aspect: many administrative and preparatory costs are incurred regardless of how long you are on site. If your stay is longer, it makes more sense to spread these costs accordingly.

We also take sustainability into account. As the journey often involves a long-haul flight, a longer stay helps to make the trip more conscious and sustainable.

For all these reasons, we only offer our programs for a minimum duration of four weeks, in the interest of the projects, the environment and your personal experience.
