VOLUNTEERING IN PANAMA

A visa is generally not required for stays in Panama of up to 90 days. Upon entry, you may be required to present a valid passport, a return or onward ticket, and proof of sufficient financial resources. If the volunteer work is to last longer than 90 days, additional residence or work permits may be required. The final decision in each individual case is made by the relevant Panamanian authorities or the Panamanian Embassy.

There are no mandatory vaccinations required for volunteering in Panama if you are traveling directly from Europe. However, a yellow fever vaccination may be required if you are entering from a yellow fever-endemic area or have previously stayed there. In addition, the German-speaking foreign ministries and health authorities recommend the standard vaccinations in accordance with national vaccination plan Keep this information up to date. Depending on the location and type of volunteer work, vaccinations against hepatitis A are also recommended; for longer or closer contact with the local population, vaccinations against hepatitis B are also recommended, as well as against rabies in certain cases. In some regions of Panama, there is also a risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, which is why consistent use of mosquito repellent is particularly important. Individual vaccination recommendations depend heavily on the length of stay, region, and activities and should be discussed with a travel medicine specialist before the trip.

The main difference between the two programs is the kind of experiences you want to have during your stay abroad.

During a volunteer assignment, you’ll actively participate in charitable or sustainable projects. In doing so, you’ll support local organizations and help address social or environmental challenges. At the same time, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the life and culture of your host country from a particularly authentic perspective.

Work and Travel, on the other hand, takes a different approach. Here, the focus is on flexibility, travel, and gaining practical experience. Typical work locations include hostels or farms. In exchange for your work, you’ll receive room and board. The focus is less on contributing to a charitable cause and more on cultural exchange and experiencing everyday life in the host country.

No matter which program you choose, both options offer you the chance to explore a country in depth and gain valuable experiences. In some of our other destination countries, you can also participate in a Surf camp or a Hostel get involved. Anyone who wants to combine different experiences also has the option of combining volunteer work with a work-and-travel program.

Compared to many other countries in Central America, Panama is considered easy to travel in, especially if you plan ahead.  

In tourist regions and at our project sites, travelers can generally get around safely as long as they take the usual precautions. However, travelers should be especially vigilant in crowded areas, at bus stations, or in certain neighborhoods, as pickpocketing and petty crime can occur there. Demonstrations and roadblocks can occur at short notice and affect travel within the country, but they are usually resolved relatively quickly. 

Particular caution should be exercised, especially in remote border regions—particularly parts of the Darién region on the border with Colombia. We have therefore deliberately chosen to locate our programs in regions that are easily accessible to our participants and better developed.

To help you feel well-prepared, we’ll provide you with important information about your stay even before you leave. Upon your arrival, you’ll receive an orientation from our local contact person and get specific tips for daily life there. Throughout your entire time in Panama, our local contact person, the project management team, and our staff will be there to support you.

With good preparation, mindful behavior, and adherence to local recommendations, volunteering in Panama is entirely feasible and can be a safe, enriching, and unforgettable experience. Nevertheless, it’s advisable to stay informed about the current security situation and to remain vigilant while there. The cost of the program in Panama depends on the selected field of work and the length of your stay. The participation fee usually covers various services, including housing, support from our team, and organizational preparation. Depending on the project, meals may also be included. Not included are travel to and from Panama, appropriate international travel insurance, and personal expenses during your stay.

We do not require payment of the participation fee all at once, but rather in several installments. As soon as your registration is successfully completed, you will receive all the documents you need to plan the rest of your stay, including your booking confirmation and all relevant information about your program.

To reserve your spot, an advance payment of 10 % of the total amount is due. The remaining balance must then be paid no later than four weeks before the scheduled start of the program.

You'll receive a detailed overview of the payment deadlines and terms during the registration process, as well as in your personal travel documents.

A volunteer project in Panama is ideal for solo travelers. Many of our participants arrive unaccompanied and quickly find themselves in a welcoming and international environment once they arrive.

Depending on the project, you'll be housed with other volunteers, for example in a Shared accommodation or right on the organization's grounds. This creates plenty of opportunities in everyday life to meet new people and make friends.

Even outside of project work, joint outings, meals, and leisure activities foster a strong sense of community. This makes it easy to settle in and become part of the community.

Throughout your stay, you'll also have access to a local Contact person aside. At the same time, you'll get to know people from different countries who are going through similar experiences as you.

Our programs can be flexibly adapted to your travel plans. This means you can extend the duration of your stay as you wish or combine different programs if you’d like to stay in Panama longer.

For many participants, the adventure doesn’t end on the last day of the project. They often use the time afterward to explore other parts of Panama. With tropical islands, impressive rainforests, and lively cities, there are countless opportunities to experience the country in your own way and create unforgettable memories.

Particularly popular are trips to the Bocas del Toro and San Blas archipelagos, hikes through the rainforests of the interior, or a visit to the capital, Panama City, with its famous canal. This makes it easy to combine your stay with a customized tour and add many more unforgettable experiences.

If you'd like to set aside even more time for personal travel experiences after your volunteer work, you can easily extend your stay. This way, you can combine meaningful project work with an unforgettable tour and get to know Panama even better.

You have complete flexibility when planning your stay. Instead of limiting yourself to a single area of focus, you can combine different programs based on your interests to create a completely personalized experience.

For example, many participants choose to explore different fields of work and complete several projects in a row. In addition, it is possible to combine programs in different countries or adjust the total duration of the stay as needed.

If you'd like to take a break between assignments, you can use that time for your own travels. This gives you the opportunity to explore the area at your own pace and make your adventure abroad even more varied.

Our programs are available only for stays of four weeks or longer. There are several reasons for this, all of which benefit both the local projects and the participants.

At the start of an assignment, it takes time to get up to speed with your new responsibilities, the work environment, and local conditions. The teams on the ground are deeply committed to thoroughly preparing and supporting new volunteers. To ensure that this effort pays off and that you can make a real contribution, it makes sense to commit to a certain minimum duration.

As time goes on, not only will your understanding of the project grow, but so will your ability to take on responsibility and effectively support the work on the ground. This results in greater benefits for everyone involved.

Furthermore, the experiences of many participants show that the most memorable moments often don’t occur until after the first few weeks. Once you’ve settled in, made connections, and become familiar with daily life, the experience often becomes much more intense and enriching.

Organizational factors also support a longer stay. Regardless of whether someone stays for four weeks or several months, many of the preparation and support costs are incurred only once. A longer stay therefore ensures a better balance between the costs and the duration of the program.

Last but not least, we also take sustainability into account. Since getting there often involves a long flight, staying for several weeks helps make the trip more meaningful and ensures that the time spent there is used to the fullest.

For these reasons, we have decided on a minimum stay of four weeks so that both the projects and the participants can benefit as much as possible from the experience.
