For volunteer work in Peru

Prerequisites

For your volunteer work in Peru with WanderWorld Travel, what matters most is your openness, motivation, and desire to get actively involved and learn new things. Most projects do not require any special prior experience. What’s much more important is that you’re interested in the specific activity, enjoy working in a team, and are willing to adapt to new people and a different culture.

For social projects involving children and teenagers, you should enjoy working with people and be responsible. Qualities such as empathy, reliability, and creativity will help you build trusting relationships and make a positive difference in the children’s daily lives. Previous experience working with children is a plus, but not required.

In nature and animal welfare projects, too, what matters most is your motivation, ability to work in a team, and enthusiasm for the environment and sustainability. You should be willing to roll up your sleeves and get involved, adapt to simple living conditions, and be open to new experiences. Good physical fitness and a willingness to work closely with others are helpful in this regard.

Language

The local language is Spanish, and it plays an important role in daily life. Depending on the project, different levels of language proficiency are required. In some projects, basic knowledge of Spanish or English is sufficient to communicate within the team. In other projects, particularly when working with children and in the education sector, good to advanced Spanish skills are required, as communication takes place primarily in Spanish.

Generally speaking, knowing Spanish will make it easier for you to get started and help you communicate more effectively with the local people. At the same time, you’ll naturally continue to improve your language skills during your time on the project and experience the culture even more deeply.

FAQ

About Volunteering in Peru

A Yellow fever vaccination is only required for certain regions of the Amazon; it is not required for Lima, Cusco, or Machu Picchu. The biggest difference between volunteering and work and travel lies in the focus of your stay.

Through volunteer work, you actively participate in social or environmental projects and support local initiatives. The main focus is on making a meaningful contribution while gaining an in-depth understanding of the culture and way of life in your host country.

Work & Travel, on the other hand, combines travel with hands-on work. Typical work locations include hostels, surf camps, or farms. In exchange, you often receive accommodation and, in some cases, meals. Unlike volunteer work, this is less about social engagement and more about the experience, cultural exchange, and daily life in the respective country.

If this concept interests you, feel free to check out our Work & Travel programs in Peru.

Volunteering in Peru is a unique and enriching experience for many people. You’ll get to know a fascinating culture, meet warm-hearted people, and create memories that will often stay with you for a lifetime. At the same time, it’s completely understandable to have concerns about safety before your trip.

As in many South American countries, it is important in Peru to be mindful and respectful of one’s surroundings. Official travel advisories, such as those from the U.S. Department of State We recommend being especially vigilant, particularly in larger cities and tourist areas, especially with regard to pickpocketing and petty scams. Security conditions can vary significantly from region to region.

Many of our participants work in well-developed areas such as Cusco or the Arequipa region. These regions are very popular with travelers, have a well-developed tourism infrastructure, and offer a pleasant environment that makes it easy to settle in quickly.

In everyday life, staying safe usually means staying alert, not carrying valuables in plain sight, and avoiding being out alone at night. In other words, things you’re probably already familiar with from traveling to other countries.

The cost of volunteering in Peru depends on various factors, particularly the length of your stay and the project you choose. Program fees often already include services such as accommodation, on-site support, the organization of your stay, and in some cases, meals. Additional costs usually include airfare, insurance, and personal expenses during your trip.

We process payment for the program fees in several steps. After you book, you will receive all the necessary documents and information to help you prepare for your trip, including your confirmation of participation and the invoice.

A deposit of 10 % is typically due immediately after booking to secure your spot in the project. The remaining balance is then due approximately four weeks before the trip begins.

Of course, you’ll receive all the information regarding payment deadlines and terms in a clear and transparent manner during the booking process, as well as in the documents we send you.

Yes, you can easily volunteer in Peru on your own; in fact, many participants choose to travel there alone. Once you arrive, you’ll quickly be integrated into the project and become part of the team right from the start.

In many projects, you'll live with other volunteers, for example in a guesthouse or in shared accommodations right on the project site. This allows you to quickly get to know new people and easily make friends.

Sharing daily life, working on the project, and participating in various group activities often quickly lead to new friendships and a strong sense of community.

Plus, you’ll always have a local contact person and become part of an international community that will support you throughout your stay. That’s exactly why volunteering in Peru is a great option for anyone who wants to travel alone but doesn’t want to be alone for long.

Yes, with us you can plan your stay flexibly and easily combine your project with a trip through Peru. For example, you have the option to extend your program or combine different stays.

Many participants use the time after their volunteer work to explore Peru on their own and get to know the country more deeply. Peru offers ideal opportunities for this and impresses with highlights such as Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Lake Titicaca, and the fascinating landscapes around Cusco and Rainbow Mountain.

Adding an extra month of travel to your project is therefore no problem at all and a great opportunity to enjoy your adventure in Peru to the fullest.

With us, you can flexibly combine multiple projects and customize your program. This means you’re not limited to a single project—instead, you can combine different experiences.

For example, you can start by volunteering with a social project and then follow it up with an animal welfare project or a hostel experience. You can also easily combine programs in different countries. Plus, you can extend your stay or add additional programs at any time.

Between individual projects or after your program, you can also set aside time for travel so you can explore the country on your own and gather even more experiences.

Our projects are intentionally designed to last at least four weeks, and there are several important reasons for this.

At the start of your stay, there will be an orientation period. During this time, you’ll get to know the project, the on-site procedures, the team, and your responsibilities. At the same time, the staff will invest a lot of time and energy in preparing you well and helping you get up to speed.

To ensure that your involvement can create lasting value for the project, it’s important that you have enough time to actively contribute. Only after you’ve settled in will you be able to take on responsibilities, put your skills to good use, and support the project in the long term.

A longer stay is often particularly valuable for you personally as well. Many volunteers report that the most intense experiences and the greatest personal growth only come about once you’ve truly settled in and feel like part of the project.

In addition, many organizational and administrative costs are incurred regardless of the length of stay. These costs are spread out more evenly during a longer stay.

Sustainability is also a factor. Since the trip often involves a long-haul flight, staying longer helps make the trip more mindful and sustainable.

For these reasons, we offer our programs with a minimum duration of four weeks—for the sake of the projects, the environment, and your personal experience.
