What’s particularly fascinating is that religion and history here aren’t confined to museum walls. Buddhist traditions continue to shape many aspects of daily life to this day, and temples remain important places for prayer, ceremonies, and festivals. This means that on your trip, you’ll not only get to visit impressive structures but also experience the significance these centuries-old traditions still hold in modern-day Sri Lanka.
An Island Full of Flavors
Sri Lankan cuisine is just as diverse as the island itself and has been shaped over the centuries by regional traditions, trade relations, and various cultural influences. Rice, coconut, fresh vegetables, and aromatic spices form the basis of many dishes. However, „curry“ doesn’t always mean the same thing: Often, several small curries with very different flavors are served together with rice.
Among the specialties you absolutely must try are hoppers—bowl-shaped pancakes made from rice flour and coconut milk—as well as kottu roti, in which flatbread is chopped up and fried on a hot metal griddle with vegetables, spices, and other ingredients depending on the variation. These are served with spicy sambols, fresh tropical fruits, and, of course, the famous Ceylon tea.

What’s much more important is that you’re willing to get actively involved, take on responsibility, and adapt to new ways of life.
In the Elephant Project, your commitment to animal welfare takes center stage. You should enjoy rolling up your sleeves and actively supporting the project’s day-to-day work. An open-minded attitude toward the local culture, as well as a respectful and appreciative demeanor, are particularly important, as is a willingness to adapt to a new environment and work as part of a team.
In the teaching project, too, your personal qualities are what matter most. You should be motivated, patient, and empathetic, and willing to share your knowledge. Creativity and initiative will help you engage in the classroom and learn and grow together with the participants.
Language
Communication in the projects is primarily in English. In the Elephant Project, a basic knowledge of English is sufficient, while in the Teaching Project, advanced language skills are required so that you can actively participate in class and communicate confidently.
As a general rule, a good command of English will make it easier for you to get started and help you navigate day-to-day project work with confidence. At the same time, you’ll continue to develop your language skills on-site and gain valuable experience through intercultural exchange.

Even outside of your volunteer project, there's plenty to experience in Sri Lanka. The relatively short distances make it possible to use days off and weekends for outings and, at the same time, very different regions to get to know the island.
Depending on what you feel like doing, you can go hiking, surfing, on a safari, visit local markets, or sample Sri Lankan cuisine. You can also easily plan longer trips before or after your project, taking you from the mountains in the interior to the Indian Ocean.
Spiritual places such as the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy or the Sigiriya rock fortress provide insights into the country's history and religion. Temple visits convey an authentic feeling for Sri Lankan culture.
