VOLUNTEERING IN THAILAND

To volunteer in Thailand, you'll need a Nonimmigrant Visas. You can apply for this visa online up to three months before your departure. The visa fee is currently €70.00, and the visa is valid for a stay of up to 90 days.

You'll receive all the important information, as well as additional documents for the application and step-by-step instructions, in your preparation package. This ensures that nothing stands in the way of submitting your application on time and having it successfully approved. 

Generally, no mandatory vaccinations are required for direct entry into Thailand from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. An exception applies when entering from a yellow fever-endemic area.

Before your trip, however, you should have your routine vaccinations (including tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, polio, and measles) checked. In addition, for Thailand in particular, Hepatitis A as well as depending on the itinerary and destination Hepatitis B, typhoid fever, rabies and Japanese Encephalitis Recommended.

We recommend that you do so no later than 12 weeks before departure Seek advice from a tropical medicine institute or a travel medicine clinic. This will give you enough time in case you need multiple vaccinations or booster shots.

Whether volunteering or work and travel is a better fit for you depends on what kind of experience abroad you're looking for.

When you volunteer, you get involved in a social, environmental, or charitable project and actively support local people or the environment. You become part of the project’s daily routine, get to know the culture from a whole new perspective, and can make a lasting impact through your efforts.

Work & Travel takes a different approach. The focus here is on travel combined with hands-on work. For example, you can work at a hostel or a diving school, and in return, you’ll usually receive room and board.

No matter which option you choose, both will give you deep insights into local life and unforgettable experiences. Would you like to actively contribute to a project, or would you rather combine travel with work? The decision is entirely up to you. Of course, you can also combine both programs to get the best of both worlds.

Thailand is a popular destination for volunteer work and can be traveled safely with proper preparation. Our project locations are in regions that are well-developed for tourism and classified as safe. However, certain border crossings in the south of the country, as well as the border area with Cambodia, should generally be avoided if you’re traveling independently. Up-to-date information on the security situation is available from, among others, the Foreign Officethat Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMEIA) and the the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is available.

As with any travel destination, however, you should still take some basic precautions. These include keeping a close eye on your valuables, using official transportation, and avoiding demonstrations and large crowds. 

Throughout your stay, you won’t be on your own. Our team and our local contact person will support you from day one, conduct a detailed orientation session, and be available to you throughout your project. This way, you can begin your volunteer work well-prepared and with peace of mind.

The cost of volunteering in Thailand depends on the project you choose and the length of your stay. The program fee typically covers the organization of your placement, on-site support, your housing, and, depending on the project, meals as well. In addition, you should budget for travel to and from Thailand, international health insurance, and personal expenses during your time in Thailand.

We do not charge the program fees all at once, but in two installments. After you book, we’ll send you all the relevant documents you’ll need to prepare for your trip, including your confirmation of participation and the corresponding invoice.

To ensure that your project spot is reserved for you, an initial deposit of 10 % is required. The remaining balance is due no later than four weeks before your departure.

You'll find a clear overview of the relevant payment details and deadlines in your documents, and they'll also be clearly explained again during the booking process.

Of course, you can also travel to Thailand on your own to do volunteer work there. Many of our participants deliberately choose to travel alone and have unforgettable experiences as a result.

Depending on the project, you'll live with other volunteers, for example in a Shared accommodation or right on the project site. This makes it easy to meet other travelers right from the start and quickly make new friends.

You’ll also spend a lot of time with your team and the other volunteers while working on the project. Working together on tasks and participating in leisure activities will help you quickly feel like part of the group. If you have any questions or face any challenges, you can always reach out to the local project coordinators.

If you want to explore Thailand on your own but don't want to miss out on a sense of community and support, volunteering is an ideal option.

You can plan your time in Thailand with complete flexibility. You can combine your volunteer project with a customized tour, extend your stay, or combine several programs.

Many of our participants choose to travel to other parts of the country after completing their project. Whether it’s impressive temples, tropical islands, national parks, or bustling cities—Thailand offers a wide variety of destinations that are perfect for exploring after your project.

If you'd like to experience more of Thailand after your volunteer work, you can easily plan for additional travel time. This will give you the chance to explore the country at your own pace and make your stay even more varied.

You don't have to commit to just one project. With us, you can combine different programs based on your interests and customize your stay in Thailand.

For example, many travelers combine a social project with a Nature- or Animal welfare project. Cross-country combinations are also easily possible. If you'd like to stay longer, you can extend your trip at any time to include additional projects or extra weeks.

Of course, there will also be plenty of time to explore Thailand on your own. Between two projects or after your assignment, you can plan a personalized tour and discover the country’s diverse landscapes, islands, and cultural highlights.

Our volunteer programs generally require a minimum stay of four weeks. There are several reasons for this minimum stay, and it benefits both the projects and you as a participant.

At the start of your assignment, you’ll be introduced to the project step by step. You’ll get to know the team, familiarize yourself with daily routines, and be prepared for your tasks. This intensive support takes time and represents a significant organizational effort for the project managers.

Only once this orientation period is complete can you truly put your knowledge and skills to good use. This way, the projects will benefit from your support in the long term, and your efforts can make a lasting impact.

A longer stay is also worthwhile for you personally. After the first few weeks, you’ll often start to feel more confident in your new surroundings, daily life will feel familiar, and you’ll form closer bonds with the local people and other volunteers. Many people say that it’s precisely during this phase that they have their most formative experiences and create their fondest memories.
